How to Save My Marriage to a Cheating Spouse

How to Save My Marriage to a Cheating Spouse

One of the most common questions facing marital partners today is the question of whether their spouse is cheating. Many women and men choose to remain in a state of denial, afraid to learn the truth and bear the pain.

I am here to tell you that there is good news even if you find out that your husband or wife is cheating on you. The good news is that if you have proof of a cheating spouse you then can make a decision of whether you want to save your marriage.

If you want to save your marriage, the quicker you have the facts, the quicker you can take action to resolve the issues that are at the root cause of the cheating by your spouse and repair the damage. If you choose to end the marriage you will have ample reason to make that decision, painful that it is.

With the thought in mind that your decision is to "save my marriage", we should take a look at the telltale signs of infidelity by a spouse.

Men and women alike send out signals of cheating in a marriage that marriage counselors see on a regular basis.

Here's a few signs- * Your spouse has a "sudden " change in sexual proclivities or interests. They want to experiment with new sexual activities.

* The cheating spouse withdraws emotionally and /or physically. Intimacy has gone out the window.

* The become combative and critical of you as to your appearance or needs.

* The cheating spouse becomes defensive about their whereabouts and activities.

* The cheating spouse comes home wearing a different outfit then they left home with.

* The cheating spouse may buy a new fragrance or cologne and wear it frequently.

* The cheating spouse may get a new hairstyle. * The cheating spouse may become more attentive to his or her appearance. He or she may join a gym or start dieting to wear the new outfits that suddenly appear in the bedroom closet.

* The cheating spouse may start working late, have to go on a business trip, or have other reasons to be away from the family more than normal.

* The cheating spouse may become upset if you are in ear shot of their phone conversation.

* The cheating spouse may not take your cell phone calls or calls to their office or work.

* The cheating spouse may have unusual charges for items on their credit card bill such as expensive restaurants, hotel or motel bills, or clothing or apparent gift item charges that you have not been the recipient of.

* A jewelry gift box or receipt may show up in the possession of a cheating spouse.

These are just a few of the myriad signs of a cheating spouse. Carefully assemble your information but don't explode. Remember, your decision is to save your marriage.

A marriage counselor may be just what you need to help through this difficult time. Another option is to research the causes and resolution of problem relationship when a spouse cheats.

Your friends, well meaning that they may be, are not trained experts in relationships and should not be the source of advice at this critical time in you life.

To save you marriage you need a calm and clear plan to repair the damage and bring back the love and passion into your relationship. It can be done.

There are many qualified marriage counselors in every community. Make an appointment and get the help you need to save your marriage today.

Honeymooning In Zermatt

Honeymooning In Zermatt

by Chris Morton

Zermatt, located in the southern part of Switzerland, sits at the base of the Matterhorn, known to generations of American Disneyland park patrons. The quiet mountain town of around 5500 permanent residents explodes in the winter as skiers and winter sports enthusiasts converge on the town, attracted by its mountain charm, excellent ski runs, and picturesque setting. The Alpine town is a perfect spot for a romantic honeymoon, in the winter and even during the summer months.

History Zermatt, named for the German ''zur matte'' or '' in the meadow'' was a sleeping agricultural town until the mid-1900s. The region's potential for alpine sports was first "discovered" by British climber, Edward Whymper, who led the first successful expedition to the top of the Matterhorn.

Winter Sports at Zermatt Zermatt is surrounded by four, distinct ski areas - Sunnegga, Gornegrat, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. In addition, there are connecting lifts to the Italian ski areas of Cervinia and Valtourneche. Zermatt offers visitors snow-covered peak, 365-days a year. The resort includes 132 ski runs, 76 percent of which are intermediate, 28 percent advanced, and 28 percent beginners. The facilities include more than 70 railways, chair lifts, and ski lifts, so there's rarely any waiting.

In addition to the slopes, Zermatt features nine kilometers of Nordic ski trails, a natural and an artificial ice-skating rink, and a curling rink. One of the most popular non-downhill attractions is Gravity Park, located on the Matterhorn glacier. This attraction features a half pipe, jumps, and kickers for snowboarders.

The resort's indoor facilities include an indoor climbing wall, a large fitness center, tennis courts, and a bowling alley.

In the Summer Zermatt is just as lovely in the summer as it is in the winter. The towering Matterhorn looms over the mountainside town, in stark contrast to the bright azure sky. Summer attractions include hiking, climbing (both inside and out), and exploring the Swiss countryside. Attractions In addition to the excellent skiing and other outside activities, Zermatt offers visitors a number of cultural attractions. Among the best of them are:

* Alpine Museum - located in the heart of Zermatt, this interactive museum houses the rope used in the first successful Matterhorn climb as well as a scale replica of 19th century Zermatt.

* The Matterhorn -- More than just a ski run, the Matterhorn is a symbol of Switzerland. In addition to skiing the dramatic peak, visitors can take a funicular to points near the summit, and, of course, try their luck climbing "the horn" in the summer.

* The Zermatt Music Festival - This annual festival, held for three weeks each September, allows visitors to meet artists and musicians and hosts a variety of concerts and musical events. The 2006 festival included performances by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

Visiting Zermatt Zermatt is about a three drive from the airports in Geneva, Basel, Zurich, and Milan. The resort town also has its own heliport and is about ½ hour from Milan via helicopter. Alternatively, one can take the train from major cities throughout Europe. The train ride is about four hours from Geneva.

Once in Zermatt, getting around is easy. The resort is a car-free zone and offers horse-drawn carriages and electric busses. In addition, visitors can rent bicycles and motorbikes. Of course, most attractions are within an easy walk of your hotel.

Zermatt offers all varieties of accommodations - 116 hotels in all - as well as charming bed and breakfast inns and guest houses. The resort town boasts over 100 restaurants, including 38 mountaintop eateries.

8 Great Wedding Gift Ideas

8 Great Wedding Gift Ideas

by Shauna Arthurs

You have been invited to a wedding and don't know what to give the happy couple. Of course you can always buy something from their registry and have it wrapped at the store. This is the simplest solution and will certainly be appreciated; after all, most couples would not buy their registry items for themselves, and use this list as a special 'wish list' for things they would love to have. It also guarantees you will get them something they really want and which will reflect their personal tastes.

For other ideas to get you started if you would like to be a little creative, consider the following 8 tips:

1. A luxurious gift basket is always appreciated. Fill it with decadent chocolates or imported foods; some of the more obscure or unusual bridal registry items, or linens and towels for the couple. Just be sure not to include anything perishable if the couple will be taking a honeymoon - no one wants to come back to spoiled fruit or flowers!

2. Monogrammed towels or robes are a luxury item many people - especially young couples just starting out - would not think to buy for themselves. If you are ordering towels, be sure they co-ordinate with the planned décor, or stick with classics like white or cream.

3. Give the gift of a day or weekend of indulgence with a gift certificate. A spa or romantic getaway for two is just what they will love after weeks or months of busy planning and trying to please everyone around them, especially if they are not taking a honeymoon. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness in helping them have some alone time to remember why they are doing all this!

4. If the couple are going on a honeymoon, call their destination and inquire as to any special trips or treatments you could pre-purchase for them. For example, maybe you could buy them a couples massage, a champagne dinner for two on the beach, or a special trip arranged just for the two of them. You can include a nice note in an envelope to give at the wedding - just be sure you let their destination hotel know who the gift-giver was, because they likely will not you're your wedding envelope until they return.

5. Alternatively, purchase some traveler's checks for couples embarking on a honeymoon. Weddings and honeymoons can be expensive, and a little extra spending money just for special things while they are away will be greatly appreciated. They can use them for anything they want, and will love your thoughtfulness.

6. Give the couple the gift of a little romantic adventure some time in the future, with a gift certificate for a balloon ride, or perhaps a helicopter tour of your city or the local beach or mountains...something unusual that they may not have thought to do themselves.

7. Make a gift of matching his and hers items and tailor it to the couple. The possibilities are endless; golf items for golf-lovers, his-and-hers cosmetics or toiletries; scarves or jewelry...

8. Give a personal gift that showcases the history of the bride- and groom-to-be. For example, compile a collection of photos of the two of them and have them framed, or if they met at a local landmark or event, get them tickets and souvenirs from that special time (for example, if they met at a baseball game, get them tickets to an upcoming game and matching baseball jerseys).

These are just a few ideas to get you started. The best thing to keep in mind is to consider the personalities of the couple you are buying for, rather than what you yourself might like. Happy hunting!

Wedding Cake Costs

Wedding Cake Costs

by Fernando Bellingham

One of the highlights of any wedding is the impressive and delicious wedding cake. Wedding cake costs can be a bit of a shock, but they have a wide range.

Your wedding cake will be one of the first things people look at as they enter your reception site. There will be pictures of it, and you may even recreate it for anniversaries to come. The centerpiece of your wedding can be costly, yet is extremely important. There are several ways to get a wedding cake on a budget, and even more ways to go all out. Wedding cake costs vary, but you can have the perfect cake on any budget!

If your budget is tight, go for a do it yourself attitude. Before your big day, take several cake decorating classes. The cost is small compared to the hourly cost you will pay for the manual labor of someone else decorating your cake! Buy a few different size pans, depending on the size and shape you want your cake to be. Bake your own cakes from scratch or from a mix the day before the wedding. Enlist the help of friends and family in decorating your cake. For that smooth wedding cake look, buy pre-made fondant at your local craft store or bakery. Fresh or silk flowers will also add a cheap yet elegant look to your wedding cake on a budget. For a low cost, your cake will often taste better than a professionally designed one!

If budget is no matter for you, your options are endless. There are cakes that range anywhere from $8 per serving to over $30 per serving. This cost often includes a tasting and design session for you and your family. This ensures that you will pick the perfect selection for your tastebuds. If you are having your reception at a hotel, their restaurants will oftentimes have a wide selection of gourmet wedding cakes to choose from. For a truly unique cake, contact local bakeries. Almost every large city around the country will have one or two renowned bakeries, famous for their wedding cakes. Before you go to your tasting and design appointment, be sure you know exactly what you are looking for. Many custom bakeries are just that- custom. This means that they will not have a book of cakes for you to look through and choose from. You will come up with your own creative design.

If you are on a moderate budget and can afford to spend some amount on your cake, there are viable options for you, too. Bakeries that mass produce cakes can often make your beautiful wedding cake at a fraction of the cost that custom bakeries will charge you. Give the bakery plenty of notice to avoid any expediting fees. Instead of having the baker decorate the cake by hand, supple them with fresh or silk flowers to adorn the cake. Since cake decorating is often charged for by the hour, placing flowers will take only minutes. This can have a dramatic impact on wedding cake cost.

No matter if you are on a budget or money is no option, you can have a beautiful wedding cake. Plan ahead to make the most of your money and you will end up with a cake fit for a princess!

Bahamas Resorts

Bahamas Resorts

by James S.

The Bahamas is home to several resorts, a few of which also have the so-called "all-inclusive" vacations.

Before going into the resorts themselves I think the term "all-inclusive" should be defined because most people think this means one thing, when in reality it means something else all together.

All-inclusive is a term to mean that three major meals and some soft-drinks during the day, are included in the hotel charge. It does NOT automatically mean that everything there is to do at the resort is free of charge (though some things are).

European is a term to describe hotels where you are paying for the hotel room, but drinks and meals are extra. It does NOT automatically mean that other amenities/ "things to do" will also come with a charge.

DO NOT make the mistake of automatically assuming that one of the above is automatically going to be less expensive or have more things to do than a hotel/resort that operates under a different one.

There are numerous pros and cons, and VAST differences from one hotel/resort to the next.

The major resorts are: Atlantis Paradise Island *European Plan* The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas hardly needs an introduction. With its 2,300+ guest rooms divided amongst 3 tower sections, this 4 star, family friendly resort offers more to do than many major theme parks.

This is one of the most popular destinations for first-timers to the Bahamas for a very good reason.

However, due to its size, you can't really "get away" at this resort.

Breezes Bahamas *All Inclusive* Here, beside the crystal clear waters, you can listen to the gentle call of the sea bird and feel your worries drift away with the tide. At night, a short stroll along the beach takes you to the excitement of Nassau's glittering casino.

This is one of the few resorts where "all-inclusive" almost really does mean that. Food and drinks whenever you want them are included and there is A LOT to do right here in the resort. Somehow, this resort does a FANTASTIC job of never seeming crowed or over busy.

While there isn't as much to do as at the Atlantis, this may be one of my favorite resorts for a short getaway.

Comfort Suites Paradise Island *European Plan* Comfort Suites Paradise Island Bahamas is located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas adjacent to the Atlantis Resort. 5 minutes from Paradise Island International Airport. 10 minutes from downtown Nassau.

If you're on a budget, and money is tight but you still want a vacation in the Bahamas, this "resort" is the ticket. While it is little more than a glorified hotel with virtually zero on-site amenities, the price of this one is right. Further, it is close to just about everything and they do an admirable job of keeping the feeling still up-scale enough to make it a worthy vacation destination.

Nassau Beach Hotel *European Plan* A 3 star budget hotel located amidst the hustle and bustle of the other Cable Beach facilities, Nassau Beach Hotel owns 750 feet of beachfront property and offers complimentary watersports to guests, who can also sign up to take advantage of the amenities of its companion hotels the Wyndham Nassau Resort and Crystal Palace Casino, which it neighbors.

This is another hotel for the budget conscious, and many people prefer this hotel over the Comfort Suites thanks to the fact that this hotel is RIGHT on the beach. I will say that I'm partial to the Comfort Suites, but if you're going to the Bahamas to spend most of your time relaxing on the beach then this is the hotel for you.

Pelican Bay *European Plan* Nestled at water's edge, the 90-room Pelican Bay at Lucaya is a Caribbean hotel with a distinct European architecture and a spectacular location on Lucaya Bay. For our more discerning guests, we offer The Pelican Bay Suites.

When it comes to the budget 3 star resorts, those that are Paradise Island, or within the city of Nassau itself, are typically just a little better in my opinion. This one however is an ENORMOUS exception. Part of its appeal is that it isn't on the main island where almost every "newbie" to the Bahamas goes. It is well maintained, in expensive, and thanks to being on the Grand Bahama island isn't quite as crowded. The hotel is well maintained, and one of my personal favorites for the short getaway when I'm not planning on spending much.

RIU Paradise Island *All Inclusive* Located right next door to the expansive Atlantis resort on Paradise Island, RIU offers an endless variety of activities for every traveler. Watersports on the fabulous beach, daily activities for adults six days a week, and nightly entertainment are offered.

Seriously, for the money, I don't think this one is worth it. I know lots of people however that absolutely love this resort ... I don't. It isn't that there's anything "wrong"; it's just that for the money you can do better.

Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa Quote or Book Online Here *All Inclusive* Voted the Caribbean's Leading Resort, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa is the ultimate getaway for travelers. Absolutely nothing compares to this Four Diamond All Inclusive resort. Nestled on Nassau's famed Cable Beach.

If you've got the money, this is THE location to go to (and honestly, if you're going to RIU you can probably afford this). Easily my single most favorite resort in the Bahamas PERIOD. If you're going to be taking a week or more in the Bahamas and can afford a little extra, then I highly recommend this over th much more crowded Atlatis.

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach *All Inclusive* Among the many amenities, the property offers two delicious restaurants, three bars, a disco, an invigorating activities program, a kid's club, and gymnasium. Often referred to as vacation paradise,

Some of the best golfing in the Bahamas can be had right here at this resort. I've only stayed once and it was pleasurable, but my time actually IN this hotel was quite brief so unfortunately I can't say any more about it.

Wyndham Nassau Resort Quote or Book Online Here *European Plan* This 3 star resort on the banks of Cable Beach features a Las Vegas style casino, a 75-yard swimming lagoon and 200 yards of private crystal sand beachfront. Along with its own amenities, guests staying at the Wyndham Nassau Resort can enjoy the comforts of its neighboring resort, the Nassau Beach Hotel.

Little more than a glorified Wyndham you can stay in anywhere else in the states. Its one saving grace is some fantastic activities for kids.

The bottom line: I do want to point out a couple of things real quick. First, there are other smaller hotels that are in quite a large number of ways BETTER than these that you can stay in for less money. There are also beach cabanas you can stay in (think small beach cottage) for about the same price as some of the more pricey resorts.

If you haven't been very many times to the Bahamas, then these popular resorts/hotels are definitely the places to stay, and which one you choose should be determined by your budget and planned activities.

If you have plenty of money for your vacation, and if you have not been to the Bahamas often, then the Atlantis, Sandals Royal are the places I most recommend.

If you've got a budget and plan to spend time out and around town in Bahamas, then go for the Comfort Suites.

If you're on a budget and you plan on spending most of your time at the beach, then the Nassau Beach Hotel is for you.

However, if you've been to the Bahamas more than three or four times and want to stay away from Paradise, then shoot for Pelican Bay (no matter what your budget).

Those are my recommendations anyway.

Get Out To Enjoy A Quick Holiday

Get Out To Enjoy A Quick Holiday

by Johnathan Bakers

If you are tired of the wintertime blues and you want to do something fun, you may want to take a vacation. You may want to think about getting away from it all and doing something fun for yourself. However, it is right after Christmas and you will still have to pay those Christmas bills. What are you going to do? There is no way that you can afford to pay for a trip or plan ticket now. There is an option for you so that you can afford and you do not have to miss any time from work as well.

You can take a great getaway in your hometown. There are great places to see and things to do in your own home town that have been there forever and you just never took the time to see. You should not take these things for granted anymore and go out and have some fun. There are places to visit and things that you can do to keep you entertained and excited without leaving your own town.

You should be able to take at least three days out of your busy workweek to enjoy these great sites. You can spend some time relaxing and enjoying life without spending a lot of money. You can take a great three-day vacation in your own hometown easily. If you do not have a lot of money to spend on this vacation it is ok. You can get a hotel room with a great deal of amenities so that you can do all the things that you would if you were on vacation. This is especially great if you live in an area that has snow and ice all the time. You can take advantage of the free breakfast and get some relaxing time to yourself or with your loved one at a price you can feel good about.

If you do not have any money, you can stay at home. Do not take any phone calls and stay away from your computer and work. Make this your time and do what ever you want. This is a great way to have a three-day getaway for you. Lock the doors and enjoy the quiet time. Watch your favorite movies and eat all you want. This is a great adventure for anyone.

If you live in a hometown that has places for hikes and other beautiful places in nature to go, you should take advantage of it. There are great places that you can see that do not cost anything or much at all. You will love being out in nature and seeing what was always right there in front of you and you never noticed.

If you have some great historical sites in your hometown, this is the perfect time to check them out. There are great things to see and learn about that you never even took the time to know before. You will feel good about this type of getaway and it is going to be a great experience that you can keep with you forever. There is little travel involved and it is a great time to do on your own or with someone that you love.

Museums are another great way to get away. You can check out all that is available to you when you visit one of these hometown places. You will not have to go far and the cost is very little. You need to take this opportunity if you are taking a three-day getaway from the hustle of regular life.

Parks are another great place to visit. You can take a bike ride or walking trial that is in your area. This is a great place that will give you some fresh air and allow you to get exercise on your three-day getaway. Take advantage of the free events that are available to you. You can check out your newspaper to find out what you can do on your time off. There is always something going on and you can do this in your free time. Visit the library and do the same thing. There are events happening all the time and you do not want to miss out on all the fun that you can have. There are also great exhibits that you can take in when you are looking for something to do as well.

There are great attractions that you can find within your limits of home. You can take great day trips to make you relax and have some time to yourself. There are things that you can do as well to spend time with your family too. You do not have to spend a great deal of money to have fun. You can stay at home, sleep in your own bed and stay comfortable for much less than what you would spend anywhere else. The most important thing to remember is that you are enjoying yourself without the stress of regular life. Choose the best attractions that are going to interest you and find something fun that you will all enjoy.

Three-day vacations can be a great and very relaxing time for you and your family. You will only need to use a little bit of imagination to make it a great family getaway for anyone that needs some time off.

Must Sees of China in 12 days.

Must Sees of China in 12 days.

by Lola Adewoyin

China boasts of twenty four cultural and five natural relics inscribed on the World Heritage List. Apart from this record, there are still fifty eight relics on the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage list to be officially added to China's cultural treasures. This record has in turn led to the rapid boost of China's tourism contributing to its economic growth. Almost every city in China has one or more sightseeing to visit and if you don't plan your itinerary ahead, you might just wander through some cities without seeing the most important attractions making your trip to China incomplete. Beijing is usually the first city to visit. Because of its significance in the historical development of China, it has a number of sightseeing which is not to be missed during your short visit here. They include The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, The Summer Palace, The Ming Tombs and the traditional Hutong. All of these attractions can be visited in three days. Xian would definitely be your next stop after Beijing. Spending two days in Xian allows you to discover the past of China since it is believed by many to be the birthplace of ancient civilization. The two major attractions to see in Xian are the Terracotta Army Warriors and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. These Xian attractions played significant roles during the Chinese revolution. From Xian, you can fly to Guilin and Yangshuo where you can spend 2 days cruising the Li River and exploring the Reed Flute caves and the Elephant Trunk hills. The few days you spend in Guilin renews your spirit with its breathtaking beauty. After the rejuvenating experience from the land of Guilin, you can spend the next five to six days in the beautiful province of Yunnan. Kunming, the spring city of Yunnan is known to be the most peaceful and laid back environment very much inclined to foreign tourists. With a wonderful landscape, more sightseeings and a favorable climate, it is no wonder why tourists flock to this part of China to spend more days there. The major highlights of Yunnan province include the Shilin Stone Forest, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and Erhai Lake. And finally, the last two days can be spent shopping and wandering around the cosmopolitan streets of Shanghai. Shanghai is one of the oldest cities in China which has developed into a fast bustling metropolis. Yuyuan garden, The Jade Buddha temple, Shanghai Bund and the French Concession are major places of interest in Shanghai. There are also a number of shopping malls and markets to buy assorted bags and shoes at reasonable prices. Five cities and twenty attractions in twelve days could just be the best way to enjoy your China travel adventure.

Explore The Many Exoctic Honeymoon Locations Of The Caribbean

Explore The Many Exoctic Honeymoon Locations Of The Caribbean

by Darlene Berkel

Your "new life together" really begins with your honeymoon vacation. The honeymoon is a well deserved post-marriage trip that many newlyweds take to celebrate their new life together. Another benefit of a honeymoon is that it can ease away the stress may have accumulated as part of the many weeks and months spent planning the wedding ceremony. Since the honeymoon is a special occassion, it is often spent in exotic, private, romantic and out-of-the-way locations. The Caribbean surely offers some of the most exotic and romatic locations. Take a look.

Guana Island

Guana Island is a beautiful place to have a Caribbean honeymoon. The entire island is privately owned and usually no more than 32 guests are allowed on the island at any given time. Accommodations tend to be available from early November to late August where you would be lodging in one of their handsome hilltop cottages that over-look the cerulean sea.

The North Beach Cottage offers more private accommodations and boasts its own kitchen, living room, several terraces and a private saltwater pool. During your romantic getaway you can enjoy tennis, the use of small, personal sailboats, windsurfing equipment, snorkeling gear, or simply hike along one of the various scenic trails. With around 850 acres of natural beauty, 7 sparkling beaches and only 32 guests you'll rarely have to share your honeymoon with anyone but your beloved.

Jamaica

Jamaica can be another great place to take a Caribbean honeymoon, offering options for stimulating excitement or tranquil relaxation at any number of fine resorts or private villas. Wyndham Rose Hall Resort can provide a particularly peaceful getaway for the newlywed couple with fun in the sun on their mind. Sugar Mills Falls is a lovely water complex that boasts tumbling waterfalls, lagoons to drift and relax in, a swim-up bar, three terraced pools, a lazy river and more where you can enjoy the warmth and companionship of your new marriage.

The resort also features an 18-hole championship level difficulty golf course that will challenge almost any enthusiastic golfer. Needless to say, you will want to do more during your Caribbean vacation that just relax on the beach or in your villa. Jamaica offers excellent dining opportunities and great shopping establishments. What better wat to take home a piece of paradise with you than to buy some exotic souvenirs that can remind y ou of this special event all year long.

The Cayman Islands

For the couple interested in diving, snorkeling and other methods of enjoying the sea, the Cayman Islands can be a titillating retreat during a Caribbean honeymoon. The Cayman islands are another top choice for an exotic honeymoon location. Just about 480 miles south of Florida this small chain of islands are big on romance, privacy, unforgettable sandy beaches, world class snorkeling and unique diving adventures. A slightly upscale location with a focus on enjoyment derived from the ocean rather than from the nightlife scene or other forms of entertainment found available on Caribbean honeymoons.

Aruba

Aruba's culturally diverse background can make this island an excellent place for the historically minded couple taking a Caribbean honeymoon. The first inhabitants on the island were actually a tribe of Indians from Venezuala known as Arawak. Many places in Aruba still have their original Indian names and many of the Aruban people still echo the faces of their native ancestors. For the history buffs or museum lovers, you can treat yourself to the Archeology Museum located in Oranjestad. You will discover an interesting collection of Indian artifacts that tell a story about the history and life of the first inhabitants of this exotic island. Another idea to add to your Aruba Honeymoon to-do list is to take a scenic drive to the country side where you can take in the vibrant, wild beauty of Aruba while spending quality private time with you sweet heart.

Wedding Reception Centerpiece - 6 Ways To Think Up Great Ideas

Wedding Reception Centerpiece - 6 Ways To Think Up Great Ideas

by Albert Lee

Categorize wedding reception centerpiece ideas that you think up or come across into three categories: what you like, what you don't like, and what you're willing to consider as a last resort.

Obviously, those that fall on the second category are immediately taken out of the running. This will serve as your preliminary round of rejection, but for sure, you're still left off with more than a handful of ideas. But don't worry because by the time you finish this sequence, you'll be left with the best!

1. Set a budget. This must be the maximum amount of money that you're willing to spend. Be honest with yourself when setting the maximum limit. If you can't afford to spend $5,000 on centerpieces then so be it. Setting a limit will allow you to discard wedding reception centerpiece ideas easily based on how much they cost.

2. Choose the wedding reception centerpiece ideas depending on SIZE. When considering the size of your centerpiece, make sure that you consider the size of the table and plates. Consider as well how many guests are seated in one table.

3. Your list of wedding reception centerpiece ideas may also be shortened according to its suitability to the wedding reception venue. If you are going to hold your after-party outdoors and there's a chance of raining, ice sculptures are definitely out of the picture.

4. Another way to filter the number of wedding reception centerpiece ideas you still have remaining is to choose only those that complement your wedding theme or motif and the rest of the decoration. Imagine having a Hawaiian-styled wedding reception only to have elegant aromatherapy candles as your centerpiece. It doesn't match at all, does it?

5. Choose the wedding reception centerpiece ideas according to its safety level, too, if you expect a great deal of children to attend the occasion. There are a lot of things that can't be used as centerpieces when there are kids around.

6. Seek the advice of professionals. Consult family, friends, and relatives whose tastes you trust. And of course, ask your partner as well. He might be the typical color-blind guy, but it's important to get his input, too. But in the end, it's your decision that really matters because you're the bride. Good luck!

Shopping For Landscaping Ideas

Shopping For Landscaping Ideas

by Andrew Caxton

There are many places where you can look for inspiration for your landscaping project. From magazines to TV shows, there are a lot of ideas that could be adapted to your garden.

Design Ideas For Your Garden

The garden can become a sanctuary where you can relax and get away from your daily pressures. Some find the landscaping process the most rewarding but you may simply want to enjoy the calming setting of a beautiful outdoor space. Either way, there are many sources of inspiration to draw from to get you on your way to a stunning backyard, even if you don't know where to start!

You can start by checking out the gardens of your friends and family to get some inspiration. You can adapt their ideas to your own backyard, to create something that really works for you. Keep your eyes open when walking around local parks and gardens, or even when talking a stroll near your home. You can find inspiration in various places when you start looking, including business parks and commercial properties as many would have used specialist landscaping architects to design their outdoor spaces.

This route, however, may not work for you. If that's the case the next place you should check out is HGTV. This TV channel programs shows about improving your home and garden that will not only be good inspiration but also a great source of tips to make your designs reality. The shows may give you ideas that you would not have thought of otherwise for designing your space, as well as helpful advice on what to plant and where depending on your typical local weather.

Another trick to get your imagination flowing is to start with a prop: whether you are considering a swimming pool, decking or fire pit you can use these items as the starting point for your design scheme. Start with the outdoor fireplace, for instance, to plan your outdoor dining space or with a pool to get inspired for your planting ideas.

As a last resort, look through magazines or ask for advice at your local home and garden store. You may find inspiration for backyard landscape ideas by just taking a stroll through the store. If that doesn't help much, or you don't know what to do with your ideas, ask a sales person for some advice. They may have ideas for you, or they may be able to tell you what has been popular with their clientele.

Finding a teen tour this summer that suits your kid

Finding a teen tour this summer that suits your kid

by Nicole Martins

For many families the summer represents a time to spend time together as well as apart to experience new adventures. Teen tours offer teenagers the opportunity to experience travel and culture with peers in a safe and fun environment. And trips are typically organized by established touring companies, providing your child with a safe, supervised trip to many locations both abroad and domestic.

Companies differ of course and the rustic appeal of an adventurous US teen tour whereby rock climbing, kayaking and high ropes are highlights, may not appeal to all teens. Most companies mix a little adventure with travel and the level of travel can include 5 star hotel and resorts or the stay at the college dormitory. How long are teen tours? This again will vary; however, 21 to 45 days is typical.

Compare Teen Tours and Companies

There are a number of ways to begin the search for that perfect travel tour for your teen. The most obvious one is by referral. Ask other parents, teens, family members, friend or associates. If you don't know anyone who has done this kind of summer program, then it's time to search online where there are a number of both directories and touring companies. Directories provide a number of referrals and you search often by state and then view the different companies in your area. Most touring companies have websites at this point, so buy getting leads from the directories you can then go directly to their site.

Hotels in Silom - Bangkok hotels with a legacy of windmills

Hotels in Silom - Bangkok hotels with a legacy of windmills

by Eric Lim

Hotels in Silom are the Bangkok hotels in the heart of the old Bangrak, a commercial and entertainment area with a long tradition of royal connections and a quaint history.

These Bangkok hotels are located with banks, commercial buildings, moneychangers, shopping centers, restaurants, street vendors, night markets and other entertainment that Silom Road a hive of activity for both tourists and Thais alike.

Silom, or windmill in Thai, used to be an area covered by orchards and yes, windmills to draw water from the canals to water the vast orchards. The area is in a very old part of Bangkok, the Bangrak district, named after a huge Rak tree trunk found in one of the canals.

There're other versions of the origins of this name. Owing to the many hospitals in the area, it's believed the name came from "raksa", as in healthcare. Whatever the reason, the roads in Silom have a long tradition of royal connections.

Silom Road was built by excavating a canal in the middle to allow for canal and land movement. Several of the roads in Silom similarly constructed and named after noblemen who were awarded royal titles for their contributions to road construction.

The Saladaeng area in Silom was originally royal land. Its name, red-roofed pavilion, was derived from the red roof of the train station built in the area by the Danish railway company. The site of a nobleman's mansion in Saladaeng is now the Dusit Thani Hotel, one of the prominent hotels in Silom.

Further on, the Swiss Lodge is nestled in Convent Road, named after the walled convent established by the Carmelite Order of Nuns.

Chao Phraya Surawongse Wattanasak gave his name to Surawongse Road, a road parallel to Silom Road, where the Montien Surawongse and Tawana Ramada are located.

Chao Phraya is also the highest title in ancient Thai nobility, similar to the Duke in British nobility. The title is no longer in use. The other titles in descending order, with their British equivalents in brackets, are Phraya, (Marquis) Phra, (Earl) Luang, (Viscount) and Khun (Baron).

Patpong, the night entertainment area between Silom and Surawongse Roads, was originally the family estate of Luang Patpong Panich, a title awarded to a rich Chinese immigrant. The raunchy activities in the area have somewhat eclipsed its regal origins.

For those who wish to have hotels in Silom within a staggering distance from their watering holes, the Silom Serene and Wall Street Inn would be ideal.

Decho Road, further down Silom Road, got its name from another nobleman, Phraya Siharaj Decho. The Bangkok hotels around this area are Narai Hotel, Silom City Inn, Sofitel Silom, Tower and Triple Two Silom.

The other hotels in Silom closer to the Chao Phraya River are Centre Point Silom, Holiday Inn Silom and Manohra The Lebua at State Tower Hotel (former Meritus Suites State Tower) stands above them all, towering over the Chao Phraya.

What's Silom like today?

Across the road from the Dusit Thani Hotel, a large tract of Saladaeng became Lumphini Park, a gift from King Rama VI to the people in 1925. Up-market high-rise apartments are sprouting up in Soi Saladaeng, the area behind the hotel.

The subway runs under Rama IV Road, which used to be a canal as well, stopping at the Silom Station below the busy Saladaeng junction, under the benign eye of the King Rama VI Monument.

The subway continues on passing under the Pan Pacific Bangkok and Mandarin Hotel Bangkok.

The red-roofed railway station that gave its name to Saladaeng is no longer there, its place taken by the Saladaeng skytrain station, less the red roof.

In the early 1960s, the canal along Silom Road was filled up for road expansion. So were the canals in the neighboring roads like Surawongse Road.

In Patpong, it's business as usual. The windmills, of course, are gone.

But the hotels in Silom, the commercial areas and the pavements in Silom Road are still bustling with life.

Hotels in Silom provide a historical background to the areas in which Bangkok Hotels are located. It is hoped that visitors to Bangkok will be acquainted with the rich history of some of the places they will be passing through.

How to Respond to Stress And Binge Eating

How to Respond to Stress And Binge Eating

by Glenn Freiboth

Stressed out? No Need to Resort to Binge Eating!

From the moment the buzzing alarm clock jolts us out of a sound sleep, most of us whiz through the day under stressful conditions. Finally, after everyone else has gone to bed, curling up on the couch with a pint of ice cream seems to be the best way to unwind. Yet even when we know in our minds that 'comfort foods' won't solve our problems, many of us still find ourselves overeating when we're under stress. There are reasons for this and ways you can resist the urge to binge.

Responding to Stress

Why does feeling stressed cause us to overeat? For one, eating is an effective way to temporarily forget about our problems. When we focus on food, we escape from our problems, at least for a little while. We've probably learned from past situations that food enables us to do this. And so eating distracts us during times of stress, and it feels good. Think about it, how many times have you run out of the office to grab some candy when you're having trouble tackling a problem at work, or meeting a deadline?

There are physiological explanations as to why we feel calmer when we eat. As blood flows from the brain to the stomach for digestion, we start to feel at ease, and ultimately relaxed.

When we gorge ourselves with food, we escape in a somewhat 'unconscious' way. Binging on very large amounts of carbohydrates produces a 'sugar high,' which can result in a 'numb' feeling, taking us away from what we really feel. In addition, the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands into the bloodstream during stressful times causes levels of serotonin, a hormone responsible for relaxed and content feelings, to decrease. Theories based on animal studies suggest that decreased levels of serotonin causes increased cravings for carbohydrate-rich foods, and once carbohydrate-rich foods are consumed, feelings of relaxation and contentedness resume.

Immediate Solutions to Prevent Eating in Response to Stress So what can you do when you feel the urge to binge? Well, there are lots of different things to do! Here are 20 activities you can do instead of grabbing those cookies or chips when you feel an overwhelming desire to eat. Before you try these suggestions, however, make a deal with yourself-that is, if you wish to have a specific food, you can have it, but only after you've done three things on the list below.

Here are 20 Things You Can Do Instead of Eating: 1. Read a book or your favorite fitness magazine 2. Search for a Web site, on a topic that is of interest to you but that you haven't had time to pursue 3. Go for a walk 4. Call or email a friend 5. Write in a journal 6. Go window-shopping 7. Play a game with your spouse, children, or pets, whether it's Frisbee or fetch, checkers or chess 8. Do an exercise video, or hit the gym for aerobics, weightlifting, or yoga 9. Tackle some household chores: dust, vacuum, balance the checkbook, etc. 10. Take a long bath or shower 11. Start your holiday gift list both gifts to give, and gifts to receive 12. Alphabetize your books, CDs, videotapes, spice rack... 13. Do some outside chores: work in the garden, mow the lawn, rake leaves, or shovel snow 14. Meditate or pray 15. Work on a craft project that will keep your hands busy: knitting, needlepoint, painting, woodworking, etc. 16. Crank up your stereo and dance around the living room 17. Try on old clothes. Clothes that are now too big as well as clothes that are still too small 18. Research healthy recipes to prepare for the coming week, and make a shopping list 19. Brush your teeth, use a strong mouthwash, then pop in a piece of extra-minty gum 20. Start, or add to, a scrapbook of your weight loss journey. Include photos, motivational articles, and your own thoughts and feelings

Longer-term Solutions

The best way to decrease the urge to binge on high-calorie foods when experiencing stressful feelings is to get at the root of the problem: that is, get at the root of what's eating you. Figure out what is causing the stress, and address the problem immediately. For example, if you are stressed about your job, find ways to cope with the problem. This can mean talking with friends and family, or speaking with a mental health professional. Talking about a stressful situation helps us to feel calm and connected to others, which can help to relieve feelings of frustration and confusion.

Another feeling that causes stress and subsequent overeating is the feeling of helplessness, and lack of control. A good way to approach this feeling is to focus on the things that you do have control over, and can make a difference in. For example, try volunteering at a local hospital, or delivering meals to the elderly. Certainly avoiding excess calories and exercising regularly are examples of things we have control over and things that we should focus on.

Other Suggestions for Dealing With Stress Over the Long-Term. Consume a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, and limit alcohol and caffeine.

As mentioned above, theories suggest that the presence of carbohydrates can help to increase production of serotonin, the chemical responsible for making us feel relaxed and at ease. Whether or not this is actually true, it is probably worth a try, especially given the fact that a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet offers many other benefits, such as weight loss and protection against heart disease. For meals, choose whole-wheat pasta with shrimp and steamed vegetables, or a large baked potato with broccoli and low-fat cheddar. Fruits, pretzels, popcorn, yogurts, puddings, and energy bars are all good ideas for snacks.

As caffeine can further stimulate the central nervous system, thereby intensifying the stress response, it's best to avoid caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and colas. In addition, alcohol intake should be minimized, as it can increase appetite and decrease control over eating behavior. Exercise!

Research shows that exercise can help to reduce stress. It can help us to 'vent' negative emotions, and it helps to boost our endorphins, or 'feel-good' hormones, ultimately improving our mood. Exercise also decreases our appetite, helping us to consume fewer calories. Try to engage in a regular exercise routine, even if that just means going for a 10-minute walk every day. Finding exercise buddies can be a great way to connect with others and do your body good at the same time.

Incorporate relaxation techniques as part of your daily routine.

Yoga, meditation, or even deep breathing can help to take the edge off. Visualizing a peaceful place can be a soothing way to 'escape' from reality, for just a few needed seconds.

Cheap Vacations: A Myth or Reality

Cheap Vacations: A Myth or Reality

by Johnathan Bakers

When there is a budget to a vacation, all-inclusive deals are the best option. For a low-price, the all inclusive holiday packages feature round trip airfare, luxurious rooms, meals and drinks and resort activities. These cheap-travel deals are great if you have teenagers because they are not much of a concern and pretty independent. All-inclusive packages also feature a free tour or two and on-sight recreation. With an all-inclusive deal you don't need to spend on anything else, except for when you want to go out on your own, or feel the urge to go curio shopping. The benefits of an all-inclusive package outweigh the cons of cheap vacations. The buffet-style allows you to experiment a wide variety of food. The service is always good plenty of are activities included in the package. The all-inclusive trips also include diving, snorkeling and a host of other water sports. There are several activities like swimming, tennis and golf that may come as part of the package. A good bargain is to buy an all-inclusive package to Disney World, which includes many activities. Some include visits to water parks, biking, and horseback riding. There are also miniature golf courses for the golf aficionados. They offer free shuttles back and forth, and need not worry about renting a car, which is an added expense. A family with older children might treasure an all-inclusive package with a skiing adventure in the Rockies or a trip to a 'dude' ranch in Arizona. Whatever your likes and dislikes, you can find activities for all to enjoy on an all-inclusive holiday. You should explore your destination on-line.

An all-inclusive vacation in Cancun sounds like heaven. The resort on a reef just off the major island is different from the regular hotels in the heart of Cancun. But you can be subjected to sales pitches to buy time-shares by low- priced resorts. What you thought would be a perfect vacation could turn into a bad dream when you realize that a few places, workers still expect a tip, even if there are notices advertising to the contrary. Tipping would also get you that extra bit of service. At the resorts, there are tip jars everywhere. Tipping is banned in some resorts and you need to find out in advance what kind of a resort you are going to.

Another disadvantage of taking an all inclusive holiday is that after reaching the resort, everything you do has to be paid for and some resorts also have limited access to activities. If not careful, a vacation you thought would help you to get away from it all may actually turn into a vacation that is restrictive and more costly. A trip to the mainland and back is the only feature offered by some packages. That means that they get you to the resort and back, to leave for home. All other visits and excursions become your responsibility and you have to pay for it.

All-inclusive packages provide you with a cheap vacation, but you should be sure that where you are going is all-inclusive. There are plenty of resources available online for vacationers to gather information about their destination. They need to check the tariff before making reservations. The tourists need to research online, on the resort and the regular services offered and compare those that are available within the 'all-inclusive' package. The difference should be clear and worth the money it costs.

Budapest and the Danube

Budapest and the Danube

by zibra

Budapest is regarded by many as one of World's most beautiful cities It is known as the "Paris of the East" and the "Queen of the Danube".

Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with the amalgamation on 17 November 1873 of right-bank (west) Buda (Ofen in German) and Óbuda (Old Buda or Alt-Ofen) together with Pest on the left (east) bank.

In 1987, Budapest was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the cultural and architectural significance of the Banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter.

The Danube flows through Budapest from north to south; within the city boundaries its widest part (640m) is in the north of the city . The river is at its narrowest (283m) below Gellért Hill; here it is about 9m deep.

Many Budapest attractions and monuments are located at or near the Danube banks. On the north there is a Margaret Island. It is 2,5 Km long and up to 500 m wide. On both of its ends are bridges: Arpad bridge and the Margaret bridge. In the Middle Ages cloisters were built on the "Rabbits' Island", as it was then called. At the beginning of the nineteenth century members of the royal family living in Buda transformed it into a landscape garden. By the turn of the century it had become a health resort owing to its therapeutic springs. Today the island is one of Budapest's most popular places for walking, bathing, amusement and sports.

On the Pest side there is a monumental building of the Parliament, one of the biggest attractions of Budapest. Souther, near the Chain Bridge (first bridge to connect Buda and Pest, built 1849), there is a Grasham palace and the Hungary Academy of Since. Near the Lagymanyosi bridge there are two new buildings worth to see: the National Theater and the Palace of Arts.

On the side of Buda you can find Fisherman's bastion and the Royal Castle, both of them very popular tourist sites. Between the Erzsebet bridge and the Liberty bridge there are the Gellert Hill , the Citadel and the Liberation Monument. The famous Gellert Spa Baths with Gellert Hotel are located near the Liberty Bridge.

Living the Dream

Living the Dream

by Paul Smith

A couple who have made a new life for themselves in France share the secrets of their success with Paul Smith

For many of us, holidays are a time for indulging in the fantasy of upping sticks and moving to France.

But few are brave enough to make the dream come true. Nothing could have been further from the thoughts of Steve and Helen Humphrey just 18 months ago.

The couple, both in their early forties, had built successful careers in England. Steve was a sales director in the food industry handling major accounts like J Sainsbury and Tesco. Helen had worked in advertising in Covent Garden and, over the last 10 years, built up an interior design portfolio with hotel, restaurant and private clients. The couple had just moved to a village near Pershore where they were 'blissfully happy and content' when, in early August 2003, they decided to book a well-earned, late break. They wanted to return to a favourite haunt - the Domaine de Peyrecaty in the Dordogne - where they had already enjoyed three 'fab' holidays.

It's easy to understand the attraction of this charming property. With its original stone buildings, it was once a working farm and would have grown tobacco, walnuts and maize. Perhaps its former owners had supplemented their income selling cepes from the estate's extensive woodland, or even much sought after truffles. Imagine the Humphreys' dismay, then, when they discovered it was no longer available and was up for sale.

Helen takes up the story: "We were not looking to buy abroad at all, but after inquiring about the price we thought that maybe it was worth a view. We flew over to France the following weekend and made an offer. Why? Well, we like a challenge, so why not? We must have been plied with too much wine!"

The compromis de vente was signed in September and in November 2003 the proud new owners and their two fluffy, white Burman cats moved out to France.

There was much to be done, says Helen. "Like most of the English who come out to find their dreams here, we'd no past experience of running holiday properties, no bar or cooking experience and no French language.

"It has been lots and lots of hard work, decorating and getting the properties up to scratch - and then even more work when our guests arrived. But it's been tremendously rewarding, we've met wonderful people, learned lots and had an enormous amount of fun on the way and made some great friends."

Perched atop the hill after which it is named, 52-acre Peyrecaty enjoys breathtaking views in all directions. As well as acres of woodland, it boasts three walnut orchards and even the remains of a troglodyte cave. Accommodation consists of four old stone farmhouses which retain many of their original features, four modern architect-designed gites and a charming woodland lodge as well as the Humphreys' own living quarters.

Facilities include a swimming pool, top quality tennis court, purpose-built volleyball court, licensed bar, dining terrace and large library which doubles as a conference room and wedding venue.

Such surroundings complement a wide range of leisure activities and Helen and Steve are keen to build on the programme offered during 2004, when they were lucky enough to attract the services of a Savoy-trained chef. He will be opening a guest restaurant at Peyrecaty this year and hosting cookery schools during selected weeks (excluding July and August). There are also plans for wine-tasting and gastronomic courses with visits to local vineyards and restaurants. Helen and Steve are the first to admit it has been a steep learning curve and not always plain sailing: She says: "The worst experience was when the local farmer came with his tractor to cut our grass late one evening. It was dark, but he looked very industrious working by tractor lights.

"The next thing we knew, the farmer was explaining that he had a 'petite probleme.' His tractor was sinking! It transpired that our main water pipe to the entire site had ruptured, the day before all our guests were due to arrive! At midnight Steve and our two helpers Mark and Pete were digging deep trenches in the field by torchlight trying to find the pipe in order to fix it. We eventually located and repaired the pipe at 4am. A truly humbling experience."

But being accepted with open arms by the locals, combined with a successful first season, has more than made up for all the hard work. "We love France with its culture, people and simplicity of life and would recommend it to others," says Helen.

What advice would she give to people starting out down the same route? "If you don't speak or understand the language when you first arrive in France, don't think you will be able to learn as you make your way through translating documents. Running a gite complex, especially one of our size, comes with enormous amounts of paperwork. "My advice would be to employ someone, say one morning a week, until you have mastered the language yourself. The money you pay them will save you lots in the long run. If you have a query with a bill, don't put it to one side until a fine comes through. Employ someone who can phone up on your behalf, argue your point and get results."

Oahu, Island Car Trips Outside of Waikiki

Oahu, Island Car Trips Outside of Waikiki

by Gene Morgan

Most folk's first trip to Hawaii consist of staying in a high-rise hotel in Waikiki, visiting the beach, enjoying the nightlife, and seeing all the sites in group tours and shuttle buses. This can be quite fun, but without a car you miss a lot.

Most people avoid car rental because traffic is a problem and there is little parking. The island is small, but really crowded. Except for the three freeways that crisscross the island, you can't call them interstates since there are no bridges to the mainland, there are only two lane roads with low speed limits and lots of other folks trying to get places as well. It is also a common belief that there are actually only two available parking places left on the whole island.

OK, so what's the problem? You are on vacation. What's the hurry? And, the goal is to see stuff outside of the tourist bustle of Waikiki. There is always a place to park along the North shore beaches. Hotels usually have underground parking which you often have to pay a little extra for and are tiny and a real adventure trying to squeeze your car into. But, again, it's your vacation. What's a little extra cost and adventure is what you are looking for.

Waikiki is much like an amusement park. It's like Disney World without the rides, but with miles of beach. It is full of sun-screened tourist and half naked young people with sand in their hair dragging surfboards twice their size. There is food and entertainment and lots of shopping. It is so much fun, but also weirdly unreal. Every once in a while you are tempted to rap on one of the walls of one of those finely architectured buildings to make sure there is no fiberglass involved. It's a surreal world.

If you are curious to find out about the rest of the island, hop in your car, take your time, and enjoy what many others never see. Here are few of the possibilities:

--- Drive around the rugged east side of the island. It is a bit of a roller coaster ride along the towering cliffs and rocky shoreline. Stop often and enjoy the natural beauty of wild ocean waves crashing against stony walls producing great geysers of foamy spray.

--- Lay for hours on end on a North shore beach, watching surfers battle the endless waves crashing on the sandy shore. Sure you can see surfers at Waikiki, but the waves are wilder and the surfers seem more daring on the North shore.

--- Grab a shrimp platter lunch from one of the shrimp trucks just outside of Kahuku. It's a tasty meal in a rustic setting. It takes a car to get there. I don't think you can get the tour bus to stop. There is nothing like it in the big city.

--- Enjoy some leisurely hours rambling around Hale'iwa, shopping, eating chocolate, shaved ice, or great hand dipped ice creams from one of the funky little shops in this quaint little village. Don't miss the surfboard painter who plays some cool jazz and blues music with his family in his studio workshop when he is not producing artwork.

--- Spend a half-day wandering in the Waimea Valley Audubon Center. There is lush tropical plants and some wildlife and you can even take a dip in the pool at the base of Waimea Falls. It's kind of like that being stranded in a tropical paradise dream you have every now and again. But it's only the North shore.

--- Hit one of the weekly Aloha Stadium Swap Meets. It's a giant flea market/sidewalk sales where you can get all those Hawaiian shirts, and other souvenirs for about half what you pay for them downtown. Stuff your trunk and ship them home. You can't do that if you are riding the bus.

--- If you get homesick you can even drive through a fast food place or spend the day at Wal-Mart or the mall. There is always someplace to park at the mall.

Oahu is a pretty small island and the public transportation is really quite good. You can see a lot on the bus and there is lots to see. But with a car you are in total control. This little list tells of only a small sampling of the possible things to do if you are in control of your mobility. The key is to be an explorer. Find your own adventures. Get behind the wheel. It's vacation.

Planning a Jamaica Vacation

Planning a Jamaica Vacation

by Anthony Thomas

The first thing you should consider about your Jamaica vacation is what kind of vacation you want. Is it a romantic getaway for two or a family vacation with your kids? Are you the laid back type that just need a beach with a cozy hammock in the shade and a good book, or do you want non-stop action-packed vacation? Do you want to experience Jamaica culture up close or do you prefer the familiar comfort of the tourist's corridor? How about night life, is it important to you or it doesn't really matter? And do you want a vacation in the busy tourist corridor or do you prefer to be off the beaten track. The answers to these questions will determine which area in Jamaica you should stay.

Once you decide where you want to stay, you have to decide what kind of accommodation you want. Here again, your choices are many and varied and range from cheap no-frills budget hotels to all-inclusive vacation like those offered by Superclubs, Sandals, Couples, and Riu resorts. Even within the all-inclusive resorts, you still have to decide on the type of Jamaica vacation you want. Some like Couples Resorts cater to couples only in a very intimate and romantic setting. Others like Beaches family resort were designed with family in mind and to entertain kids. There are hotels like Superclubs Breezes resorts that cater to active people who enjoy sports on their vacation. Then there are resorts like Hedonism that offers non-stop partying and caters more to the younger singles crowd.

As you can see, there are many different kinds of Jamaica vacations that you can have, and they all depend primarily on two things.

* Where in the island you stay
* Your hotel or resort accommodation

These two will determine what you get to see and do and will ultimately determine the quality of your stay and your vacation experience.

So how do you decide where in Jamaica to go? Well, if all you need is good beach and some sun, your choices are plentiful since you can find these anywhere on the island. On the other hand, if your needs are a bit more discriminating, you should choose a combination of location and accommodation that will best suit your needs. In most places in Jamaica, you will find a hotel or villa that will provide you with the right atmosphere to suit you; cozy, romantic, luxurious, active, partying, sports. However once you step outside your hotel, your experience will differ based on where you are. If you don't care to leave your hotel much, then look for one that you think will fulfill your needs. However, if you want to experience some of the flavor and culture or Jamaica, then you should look at each of the destination below and decide where would best provide the best experience for you. After that, you should find an accommodation with the right ambience and feel you desire.

Negril - quiet and laid back, but...

If you need a totally laid back vacation and don't care much for a lot of attractions and night life, Negril should be your first choice. Most of the major resorts and smaller hotels and villas are all located on the famous seven-mile stretch of Negril beach and the atmosphere here is very casual and laid back. Although there are not many high profile attractions or activities in Negril, you can still find things to do, but you shouldn't come here if you want to see and do a lot of things. If you love the water, you should pick one of the all-inclusive hotels since they offer unlimited water sports That being said, however, you can still have a blast in Negril, but it depends on which resort or hotel you stay. If you want to have a blast and the time of your life in this sleepy little town, then stay at Hedonism II. Trust me, I have spent many vacations here and it's always a non-stop party. On the other hand, just next door at Superclubs Grand Lido, I had a completely different experience - a quiet, romantic vacation. So do your home work and pick an accommodation that will provide the kind of experience you want in Negril.

Montego Bay - The right mix of everything

Montego Bay has long been the tourist's capital of Jamaica. What makes Montego Bay different is that it is both a city and a resort town so you can experience some of the island's culture and still have your dream vacation. There is so much to do and see here during the day and sunset just give you a welcome pause to get ready for the night. Montego Bay is happening when it comes to good restaurants, clubs, and night life, so you can party until the wee hours of the morning, if you so desire. Whether you love golf, water sports, sight seeing, or shopping, Mobay has a lot to offer. Of course, as a tourist town, Mobay is loaded with all types and classes of accommodation. From the five-star Ritz-Carlton and luxury condo hotels to basic accommodation for back-pack traveller. The only drawback of course, is that you and thousands on other tourists - including those from cruise ships will be bumping into each other. As long as you are cool with this, Mobay is one of the best places in the island to vacation.

Ocho Rios - in the middle of everything

They call Ocho Rios the attractions capital of Jamaica for a very good reason. It is right in the middle of some of the best attractions the island has to offer. These include the world's famous Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin Cove, Chukka Coves for horse back riding, White River rafting and tubing, and Shaw Park Garden to name just a few. When we refer to Ocho Rios we are including areas 45 minutes to the East and West of the city.

So why would you choose Ocho Rios instead of Montego Bay? Obviously, you would if you wanted to see many of the attractions located here. But Ocho Rios is really a small town, not a city, so it is a little less intimidating than Montego Bay. In fact, many of the resorts and hotels are located in the country side, not in Ocho Rios proper. Furthermore, it does not have the night life nor the variety in entertainment and eating choices as does Mobay. To be honest, with exception of a few clubs, Ocho Rios does not have much of a night life and night time entertainment, so look for a hotel or resort that provide some. Your choices of accommodation here is very large and varied and you should have no problem finding one that match your needs closely.

Bottom line, choose Ocho Rios if you want to be close to many of the attractions in the area and you really don't care much for wide choice and variety in night time entertainment. It is close to two hours drive from Montego Bay and three hours drive from Negril

Port Antonio - Step back in time and off the beaten track

Going to Port Antonio is like visiting Jamaica 50 years ago. Somehow, the rest of the island moved forward while this town was frozen in time. Port Antonio is all country and for a while only elite travelers and people in the know went there. It is one of Jamaica best kept secrets. So what kind of vacation will you get in this town? Probably one of the best - if you love nature, can appreciate real natural beauty, don't care much for night life or entertainment, and want to have a vacation outside of the routine ordinary.

Port Antonio is for nature lovers who want to be enveloped in the lush untouched tropical beauty of Jamaica. There is not much to do here - relatively speaking. Sure you can go rafting on the Rio Grande or go for a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon. But this is the place where you go to really relax and escape the maddening tourist crowd of Negril, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios. It is where you will find some of the best boutique hotels and villas that cater to very discriminating tastes. This is where you'll find some of best accommodations to spend a cozy romantic vacation for two. Luckily for Port Antonio, the mass all-inclusive chains such as Superclubs and Sandals have not yet invaded the town.

Bottom line; go to Port Antonio for a very relaxing laid back vacation - not laid back Negril style but real country laid back. Don't expect much of any night life unless your hotel provides it. But expect to see some of most exotic tropical sceneries, some of the best and most secluded beaches, and enjoy spectacular views of the Blue Mountain.

Songkran Adventure: Thailand's New Year Water Festival - Part 2 of 2

Songkran Adventure: Thailand's New Year Water Festival - Part 2 of 2

by Doug Anderson

Friday

Since I was getting short of money, I decided to make a visit to an ATM the evening's project. I had noticed on a map earlier that Silom, one of the main streets of Bangkok, was apparently within walking distance of my new hotel, so decided to head that-a-way. I knew there would be lots of shops and restaurants and many ATMs there, and so I could stop for a Pepsi somewhere before heading back.

It's still Songkran, the Thai New Year Water Festival. I read in the Bangkok Post that the festival lasts different lengths of time in different parts of Thailand, varying from three days to five. Tonight was the last night of the Songkran celebrations in Bangkok.

Now at this point, someone should have taken me roughly by the shoulders and pushed me up against the wall, and slapped my face a few times to get my attention. "This. Is. The. Last. Night. Of. A. Five. Day. Water. Festival. Get it?"

Um, well no, not really. I mean, I read the words in the newspaper, but what they implied was lost in translation.

I knew there was a chance I might get wet, so I removed my wallet and didn't bother with my backpack. I took a business card with the hotel name and address, and my own business card with my name on it (in case someone found my body), my ATM card, and the little money I had (about $16). I took a look at the map, memorizing the streets in this area, then folded the map, and put it in my backpack, which I intentionally left behind. I find that, if you are going to explore a strange city at night, it's much more sa-nook (fun) without a map, and anyway, being a former Boy Scout, I have an infallible sense of direction.

I made my way out of the hotel, picked up a couple of rocks in case of dogs, and made my way to the main street, a couple of blocks away, where I discarded the rocks. They were unnecessary. The lane I wanted was directly across the street from where I was standing, right next to the Citibank headquarters, according to my map. But there were six lanes of traffic and a canal in between me and it, so I had to walk a couple of blocks to the nearest intersection, where I could take a pedestrian bridge across the road.

As I'm standing facing the narrow lane, deciding if I really want to do this at night, a tall foreigner with a German accent asked me if I spoke English. "Yes," I replied, "I'm from Canada."

"Do you know where one can eat in a restaurant without getting wet?"

Um, well, as far as I know, you can eat in any restaurant without getting wet. We seemed to be on different wavelengths, so he toddled off one way, and I toddled off down the lane.

Turning the corner, I saw a pickup truck ahead, filled with young people with buckets of water, stopped at the side of the road. Oh, oh, what to do, what to do? I stood in a doorway, hidden from view. A young woman came walking out of a side lane, and looked startled at seeing me hiding in a dark doorway. I pointed at the truck up the street and yelled "Songkran!" and she laughed and walked on. I had the thought that if a young woman was unafraid about walking down a dark lane alone at night, I, a former Boy Scout, could certainly make my way past the truck. So I stepped out, and just at that moment, the truck pulled away.

I walked down the lane, which twisted and curved around, and as I passed by an intersection, another truck came around the corner and I got squirted a couple of times. I walked on, and was about to walk past an apartment building when I heard someone laughing. Looking up, I saw four young men with a big bucket and some pots, so I quickly crossed the road and continued on. I made it to a main street without further incident, and continued walking towards Silom.

Or so I thought.

I was looking for Convent Road, which I knew would take me directly to Silom. I came to an intersection, and the sign said this was Convent Road, but it was not going the way I thought it should go. So, unlike most men, I asked for directions. A young woman came along, and I said "Ta-nohn Silom tee nai?" which means "Road Silom where?" which is how you ask a question in Thai. She pointed down the street, matching what the sign said. So my infallible sense of direction was pointing me 90 degrees off from where it should have pointed; it was pointing this-a-way and it should have been pointing that-a-way. Oh well, seems to me I never did get all my Scout merit badges.

I walked down Convent Road towards Silom, and passed through an area of 4 or 5 restaurants side by side. This is one of the great pleasures of Thailand. The sidewalk was crammed with tables, over 100 people, with barely any room to squeeze through. But the smells are incredible... all that Thai food, cooked right there on the street, just fantastic. I looked inside the restaurants, and they were all empty. Everyone was outside enjoying the atmosphere. I love the smells of Thai food.

I got to Silom finally and was amazed at all the people. There were thousands of people, covering the road. Silom has six lanes with a large median in the centre, which has huge pylons holding up the SkyTrain. There was a single lane of traffic, moving very slowly, mostly pickup trucks filled with people armed with water pistols and buckets and pots of water. The sidewalks and other lanes were filled with people doing the same thing. Loud rock music was playing from several directions.

Oh, now I understand. The last night of a five day water festival. Party time.

I was on the south side of Silom. Where I wanted to be was on the north side, which is where most of the restaurants are and where I knew there were a number of ATMs. The SkyTrain station was right above me, and 50 feet to the right of where I was standing, was a long stairway up to the station. The problem was, there were over a hundred people between me and the stairway, and they were all armed.

Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.

I slowly made my way through the crowd to the stairway, getting squirted a few times, but not too badly, considering.

I climbed the stairs and made my way down the stairs on the north side.

The crowd was thicker on the north side, and I found myself being pushed along by the people as they moved into a side lane en masse. OK, I had no particular destination in mind, so I just went along with the flow.

The lane was narrow, and there were hundreds of people. Along the sides were lots of young people armed with buckets of water, water pistols, and one guy had a hose, which he squirted on everyone. Within seconds, I was drenched. There was an incredible amount of noise, rock music, people laughing and squealing when they got splashed. I kept my hands on my pockets, protecting my money, as I was pushed and squeezed by people deeper and deeper into the lane.

I was squirted from the side, and the water went into my eyes. I had to put my hands on the side of my face to protect my eyes from all the water.

At one point, I happened to look up and saw, like a freeze frame, a bucketload of water coming at us, a meter above our heads. I ducked, and sure enough, my back was drenched. Then moments later, two more bucketloads hit me from the rear.

Just then, I heard some tall people yelling at each other, saying something like "This is stupid, how will we get out?" I couldn't see through my glasses, as they were steamed up and all wet, but they were obviously foreigners. The tallest one started bulling his way forward toward the main street, causing the people around me to lose their balance and squeeze even closer together. Now this is a dangerous situation; this is how people get crushed and trampled. Fortunately, it eased up as the crowd adjusted and the bulls made their way out of the lane.

The crush of people eased a little, and something very cold splashed my back. I turned around, and a young guy was scooping ice water out of a big cooler filled with Cokes. I yelled "Nam kaeng!" (ice) at him, and he laughed and said yes, and offered to throw a second bowl of ice water at me. I declined, so he changed his angle slightly and threw it at the back of a young girl who promptly squealed.

At one point, a young guy gave me a fierce hug and yelled "Happy New Year!" in my face from six inches away.

The crowd kept moving forward further into the lane, and I went with them. I knew there was a street parallel to Silom, so I thought I would just go to the end of the lane, and take a taxi home from there, and forget about the ATM for tonight. But as I went further, the crowd stopped moving and I discovered that this particular lane was a dead end. I stood there, looking back at 2000 people, wondering if I had the energy to do that again. Suddenly I got squirted again. I was standing next to a bar with an open door, so I quickly ducked in there and stood dripping in their entrance.

The bar was mostly empty, and loud rock music was playing. I squished and squelched over to the bar, and ordered a Coke, which she poured into a glass with ice, and brought it to me where I was standing at the bar.

I reached into my pockets for my money and discovered I had no money. Well, I still had some coins and my ATM card and a blob of pulp that in a previous life had been business cards, but the bills were gone. That guy who was hugging me was probably pinning my arms while his light-fingered friend was lifting my money. I never felt a thing.

I pulled out the coins I still had. The drink was 60 baht ($2) but all I had was 40 baht and a few cents. I pushed it at her, and then yelled "Kamoy!" (thief) and showed her I had no more money. She looked uncertain as to what to do, but then made a motion which clearly meant "Give me more money". I yelled "Kamoy" again, and went through my little pantomime again, then suddenly noticed that the loud rock music I was listening to was Spanish Techno-Rock. And the name of the bar was "Noriega's".

Expect the unexpected.

Here I am, standing dripping wet, listening to Spanish Techno-Rock, in a Spanish bar in Thailand, with no money, unable to pay for a drink. How weird is that?

There was a Spanish-looking guy, with a pony-tail, standing near the doorway. Four or five young guys came in, and he stopped them, and asked them in Thai what they wanted. They said they wanted to use the toilet, and he said okay, but he made them leave their guns on the counter. I'm thinking, this is just like a Western movie. The kids put their water pistols on the counter and made their way to the washroom at the back of the bar. After they left, I figured that was a good idea, maybe I could dry off a little, so I went back too, but there were no paper towels and no hand dryers. Sigh.

When I went back to the bar for my drink, I asked the Spanish-looking guy if he was the owner, Noriega. He said, yes, he was, and he had escaped from jail and had a facelift. He has probably told that joke a thousand times, but I laughed. He told me that his father was from Chile and had married a Thai woman, and that he, Noriega, was born in Thailand and spent all his life here. And he didn't speak Spanish, only Thai and English.

I told him a kamoy had taken my money, and that I didn't have enough to pay for the drink, and he said that was OK, then reached behind the bar for his wallet, and took out a 100 baht note (about $3) to give to me for a taxi home. I thanked him, declined, and told him I was walking distance away. He then showed me the back door, which led to a parking lot, and said that I could avoid the crush out front by going out that way.

So I did that, but the problem was, that lane lead back to Silom, where there were thousands of people. Sigh.

I stood there, watching the action, and planning my next move. I didn't want to get caught up in a crush again. As I was watching, a tall, skinny German-looking lady, maybe 65 years old, appeared in front of me and squealed and laughed. Someone had just squirted her in the back. She made her way across the lane in front of me, and someone squirted her again, and she squealed again, so then two more people squirted her.

There were stairs leading to the SkyTrain station, and right near them, an ATM. Only 200 people between me and them. Sigh.

I stepped out onto the sidewalk on Silom, and very shortly, a young man stepped directly in front of me holding a small plastic bowl half-filled with white goop, the flour slurry. He slopped some on both my cheeks and grinned at me; I reached into his bowl and smeared his face, too, and he said "Happy New Year!". I said "Happy New Year to you too!" and turned slightly and saw a young woman grinning at me. She slopped some goop on my face and I did the same to her, and we exchanged greetings, all of us grinning like maniacs, surrounded by noise and hustle-bustle.

And now I finally get it. The last night of a five day water festival. Happy New Year.

And I'm thinking about the silly ritual we practice in Western society where everyone wears a party hat and stands around drinking beer or wine until close to midnight, and then everyone counts down from 10 to 1, then kisses the person next to them, and then blows a loud horn. The Thai way is much more sa-nook.

To make a long story longer, I made it to the ATM, climbed the stairs to the station platform, bought a 30 cent ticket, rode one stop, and got off near my hotel. I then discovered two convenience stores that I hadn't known about, so I stopped and bought a few supplies. Yet another cultural difference: both stores sold milk by the litre, but neither sold large containers of orange juice, only small drinking boxes. But both stores had 8 or 10 kinds of green tea in litre bottles. I passed.

I walked two blocks to my lane, and stopped to pick up a couple of rocks to throw at the dogs, if necessary. It was necessary. As I approached the end of the lane, two dogs came bounding out, barking furiously. Why do they always have to be guard dogs? Why can't they be guard cats or guard canaries?

At home in the hotel, I was shocked when I looked in the mirror. My hair was plastered to my head, my face and neck were covered in flour, my shirt and shorts were dripping wet, and had many flour blotches. I could see my nipples and chest hair through the T-shirt. I was a walking wet T-shirt contest

Anyway, I'm a "glass is half full kind of guy", not a "glass is half empty guy". Taking stock of the situation, I had a neat adventure, accomplished my goal of getting money from an ATM, went down some roads I hadn't been before, enjoyed some wonderful smells, got plastered (literally), and discovered a couple of convenience stores conveniently located near my hotel. And all it cost me was $16.

Sa-nook.

Happy New Year.

April is Songkran, the Thai New Year. Thai people celebrate three new years every year: the standard Gregorian one at January 1, Chinese New Year, and Thai New Year. Did I mention that Thai people like to have fun?

Songkran is also known in English as "The Water Festival". In the Buddhist temples, priests conduct ceremonies pouring water over people's hands while chanting a prayer.

On the streets, however, is where all the action is.

Tuesday

Today, my Thai assistant and I were out and about looking at hotel rooms, as my lease is up tomorrow and I have been looking for a smaller, cheaper place. We looked at four today alone, and that brings us up to 9 or 10 (I forget exactly) over the last week or so, plus innumerable phone calls.

While walking out of the parking lot of one hotel, I was suddenly splashed with water, and I don't mean a sprinkle, I mean a bucketful. I was shocked, of course, and then quickly realized that it being Songkran, I should have known better. My Thai assistant also got pretty wet. We walked about 20 or 30 feet, and all of a sudden, wham! Another bucket of water. Now the only thing you can do is laugh and try and wipe the water out of your eyes before it happens again.

We stood in the lobby of another hotel, and as it happens, there was a group of about 8 young people about 20 feet away, laughing hilariously, each armed with a bucket, a big pot, or a water gun. All of them were in their 20s, not kids, and all were soaking wet. Two were women, the rest guys. The women were wearing identical purple sarongs, and looked like hotel employees. They were standing on the sidewalk, watching the street. Whenever a motorcycle came by, they flagged it down, and doused the rider and passenger. Same thing for the 3-wheeled open taxis (tuk-tuks). All were drenched. Occasionally, a pickup truck ("ute" for you Aussies) would come by, filled with young people in the back. The trucks always stopped in front of the group, and they sprayed each other. Each person in the back of the truck was armed with something to throw water with, or squirt with. In one truck, there were 15 people, ranging from about 6 to 26, in the back. After a couple of minutes, the truck moved on, looking for another group.

This goes on all day, every day, for about 5 days, I think. This is the first day.

I saw one young woman who had two large, yellow water tanks on her back, and a hose leading to a huge plastic water gun which she held with two hands. In my day, a water pistol was a little black plastic thing that you had to refill every minute. Not these babies, though, she was easily carrying 10 litres of water.

As we were watching safely out the window, an elderly Muslim man with long white beard, white robe, and white cap walked by. Nobody squirted him.

Then an older Thai lady pushing a food cart walked slowly by, pushing her heavy cart, which has two large bicycle wheels, and two smaller wheels. She was already wet. She eyed this group warily, and sure enough, the two women squirted her.

I left the safety of the hotel lobby and dashed across the street to an ATM machine, where I got some more money. My ATM card, which had been in my wallet, was wet, but the machine accepted it anyway. After I got my money, I put the receipt and money in my pocket, and turned around. I noticed two young women, again in their early twenties, on the fourth floor of the building across the street with a big tub of water and a couple of saucepans, and they were letting fly at anything appropriate 40 feet below.

Just then two dark skinned men walked by the group, and they got squirted. I noticed there were a number of Arabic signs on the buildings, and realized they must be Arabs, although they were not wearing traditional jelabas, they were wearing Western clothes. They got squirted, not badly, but got angry, and yelled at the group of Thais. So of course they got squirted again. One of the Arab men then ran quickly out of range, but the other turned his back, obviously very angry, and walked stiffly away. So naturally, the Thais squirted him again.

And I was thinking, "How dumb can you be?" You come to a foreign country where the customs are totally different, and you get angry with the locals because they are following their traditions.

My assistant and I walked up the street, heading for the Skytrain station. We had to pass by another group of young people, and I discovered another part of the ritual. I had noticed that many taxis and cars were smeared with something white, which I first thought was bird poop, and then, since I saw so much of it, thought must be paint or clay. Wrong. Turns out it's just flour, and it's smeared on your face for good luck.

As we walked into this second group, one of the teenage girls tried to smear the powder on my face. This is after four others had each thrown a bucket of water at me. Everyone was laughing and giggling and having a grand time. A fifteen year old girl reached for my face, with her hand covered in this white goop. I quickly grabbed her hand, and moved it around in front of her face, and she squealed and laughed and backed away quickly.

Then I got another bucket of water from the rear, drenching my backpack and my rear end.

We walked on, and yet another group doused us.

At this point, being a normal male, I noticed yet another cultural difference. If this had been North America or Australia, all of the girls would have been wearing T-shirts, and none would have worn a bra. A huge wet T-shirt contest. Not so in Thailand. Everyone was appropriately dressed for a normal day out, and every one of the Thai women wore a bra. My assistant, for example, was wearing a business suit, and she knows all about Songkran.

Eventually, we made it to the main street, and my assistant squished her way up the steps to the elevated station. There was a KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) nearby, so I decided to head there, as it was now dinnertime, and I haven't had an order of Grease and Cold Fries for 7 or 8 months now.

Four of the KFC employees were out front with a big bucket and small pots. All of them were in uniform, and yes, they were dousing everyone.

I entered the restaurant, and immediately started shivering, as the place was air conditioned. Outside, it was a hot 33 degrees C, but inside it was only 23 or 24. Being completely wet, I was cold. I noticed that there were two employees with mops wiping the floors, and that I was, myself, leaving a trail of water as I squished my way in. I made my way to the counter, where the menu is the usual stuff, plus a few spicier things for the Thais, and ordered my usual three pieces and fries and a Pepsi. I reached for my money, and had difficulty extracting it, as it was all stuck together in a wad in my wet pocket. The ATM receipt was just a blob of pulp.

When I got to my table with the food, I took the wad of money and dried each note with a serviette. Then I opened my wallet; I keep my credit cards and frequent flyer cards and some paper notes in separate plastic pockets. Each card was wet. The water had penetrated into the wallet and into each plastic sleeve. Amazing.

After dinner, I hailed a taxi, and made it back to my hotel without further incident. Once there, I literally wrung the water out of my clothes, and then decided to throw everything in the laundry.

So this is Thailand's New Year. Sanook mahk!

Happy New Year. Now quick, duck!

Scottsdale, Arizona, Where The Living Is Easy

Scottsdale, Arizona, Where The Living Is Easy

by Gary Kiernan

Scottsdale Arizona, is internationally renowned as a major resort destination despite barely squeaking into the top 100 of U.S. cities in terms of population. No Virginia, size is not everything.

Although its nickname is "the West's Most Western Town" I have to say that really is a misnomer. In fact, construction of new horse corrals was all but banned back in the 70's. Call me old fashioned but to be "Western" I think horses should factor into the equation somewhere. The only re-shoeing going on in Scottsdale today is a trophy-wife exchanging her Blahnicks for Jimmy Choos!

That being said, Scottsdale truly is a treasure. It has been written that in terms of entertainment and culture, Scottsdale ranks at #3 behind Los Angeles and New York. As someone who has lived, at length, in all three places, I have to say that Scottsdale is most definitely on the ascendancy; indeed it may already have surpassed L.A., in this humble scribe's opinion. Certainly, theatre, dining and entertainment are L.A.'s equal, but housing costs are much lower, and the traffic here in Scottsdale is a breeze compared to the grid-lock that L.A. has become.

It is also the reason that many wealthy people, and in fact several celebrities, have chose Scottsdale for their second home. Spectacular estate homes in Scottsdale are available for a fraction of the cost of comparable homes in LaLa land. Of course, many are of new construction with all the attendant modern conveniences that would be expensive retrofits in Los Angeles. Plus we still have abundant land available here in Scottsdale, a situation not available in L.A. for many years.

Scottsdale is also well served by its own airport as well as Phoenix International Sky Harbor Airport just minutes away. Of course, the northernmost boundary of Scottsdale abuts Carefree,(which also has its own airport) even so it is still a scant 30 minute drive to downtown Phoenix.

Believe it or not, when the town of Scottsdale was incorporated in 1951 it was just one square mile. Today, it covers around 184 square miles.

As testament to its status as one of the premier golf and tourist destinations in the world, Scottsdale is home to the annual FBR Open Golf Tour, the most attended PGA event on the tour.

It is also home to the world famous Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, plus a host of lesser auctions staged at the same time, such as Russo and Steele and Kruse.

While it is true that it can be an expensive place to live, it should be remembered that the older parts are quite affordable and are enjoying something of a renaissance. One of the benefits of the cooling real estate market, is that for some who felt the ship had sailed forever in 2004 and 2005, there is a second chance to grab a piece of the dream.

Whether your interest is cars, horses, museums, art, theatre, entertainment, shopping, nightlife or golf, there is something for everyone in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Best Alicante Hotel for Any Traveler

The Best Alicante Hotel for Any Traveler

by Jerry Blackburn

The Alicante hotel experience is much like any other large city in Europe or throughout the United States. There are several types of accommodations from which you can choose depending on your preferences and needs. Among the types of Alicante hotels you will find there are:

 High Rise Hotels  Bed and Breakfasts  Conference Centres  Resorts

In addition, you will find many different classes of hotels in Alicante. These range from not rated at all to the luxurious 5 star hotels and everything in between.

Within the hotels themselves, many have the amenities all travellers love at their home away from home. These include, but are not limited to:

 Swimming Pools  Beach Access  Shopping  Fitness Centres  Golf Courses  Suites  Restaurants  Room Service

So What Alicante Hotel is Right for You?

Only you can really answer that question. The right hotel for you depends on your own personal preferences and the amount of money you are willing to spend for a bed and shower. You mush ask yourself, do I want to be near the beach? How close to I need to be to public transportation? Will I be travelling with small children?

All of these questions will help you determine what kind of hotel you need. Some hotels are very family friendly, while others, such as the bed and breakfast type hotel, are more appropriate for adults and couples.

Next, whether your travels are for business, pleasure or both will determine the right location and type of hotel. You can always book hotel rooms at two different properties if one doesn't meet all of your requirements. For example, if you have a business trip to Alicante, you may want to book a property near the Alicante Airport or city centre. You can then transfer to a seaside resort for the vacation portion of your trip. Then is when you will most likely have the time for sun and golf, and you can probably save money on the car hire or room cost by breaking down your travel plans in this manner.

Outside of Alicante Central

Outside the main city limits are smaller towns and villages in the Alicante region. This is where you will be able to experience every-day Spain and the beauty of the mountains or beaches. The slower-pace and "real" people will delight you as you experience the food and festivities of the area.

Alicante is the centre of the Costa Blanca region and just one place to visit. There is also Torrevieja, Benidorm, Murcia, Javea, Denia and Calpe. Each of these resorts have hotels, villas and restaurants that are popular with tourists year round. The climate is ideal for a vacation summer or winter with wonderful weather and much to do. The last week of June is the busiest for the whole region as they celebrate the Fiesta of St. Joan. This is a time to come if a good night life is what you are looking for on your vacation.

There are many other attractions that will be near any Alicante hotel you choose. These include:

 Elche Palm Forest  Isla Tabarca Fishing Village  Castell de Santa Barbara Castle built by the Cathraginians  Museu de Arte del Siglo XX Asegurada, Alicante's oldest building housing a collection of modern art

As you can see, any choice of hotel in Alicante will keep you near the action, whatever action it is you seek. This is a manageable and easily accessible region that is equally as populated by tourists and year-round residents any time of the year, during any season.

The Malaga Hotel Guide for Tourists

The Malaga Hotel Guide for Tourists

by Jerry Blackburn

Whatever type of accommodations you need for business or leisure travel to Malaga, Spain, there is a Malaga hotel that can take care of all your needs. Accommodations can be categorized by hotel, resort, apartment or condominium, hostel, bed & breakfast, or conference centre. While the hotels are most plentiful, there are these other types of arrangements to give you more options.

Hotels in Malaga

There are dozens of hotels in Malaga ranging in size and price. The average hotel will cost about $100 US or less, so even the four and five star rated hotels are quite reasonable. For a nicer, high rise hotel in the centre of the city, you could choose from the AC Malaga Palacio Hotel or Los Naranjos Hotel, each with all the amenities and services of any large chain. Other hotels rated highly by visitors include the Novetel Malaga or the Hotel Adriano.

Luxury Spas and Resorts

You can enjoy the beautiful weather, golf or just a relaxing holiday at any number of spas and resorts in and around Malaga. Some favourites of tourists include the Parador Malaga Golf and the Sunset Beach Club. The Gran Hotel Benahavis in Malaga features swimming and a fitness centre and costs between $100-$250 US per night. If you prefer an International chain, there is the Radisson sas el marques resort and spa.

Apartment Living

Apartments offer affordable housing for extended vacations or just the convenience of having a kitchen and other comforts of home. An option with apartments or condominiums is that you could just lease for your vacation or buy timeshares so that you can return year after year. Apartments generally do not rent by the night, unless you are willing to pay a short-stay surcharge. Usually owners like to book the apartment for at least one week as a minimum stay.

Money Saving Hostels

Hostels are not just starving students on break. They offer an entirely different way to spend your holiday. At a hostel you will get to know travellers from around the world, even if you do give up a bit of luxury in the process. Some options in Malaga include the Residencia Universitaria Santa Paula or the Picasso's Corner Backpackers Hostel. These will cost you under $30 per night. At the hostels, you will generally have access to a shared kitchen and common room, but a private sleeping area. Linens may or may not be included, but there is usually a place to do laundry and lock up valuables if need be. Some require advance reservations of at least 24 hours, while others allow for drop in. Be sure to check if yours has a curfew or you may find yourself locked out after returning from dancing or the bar!

Romantic Bed and Breakfasts Bed and Breakfasts are a little different in Malaga and the surrounding areas than you might find in New England in the U.S. This description could be applied to hotels having as many as 150 rooms, but because a continental breakfast is included it earns that name. These hotels are more like hotels than the quaint inns furnished with antiques. However, they still have plenty of European charm and personal service.

Full-Service Conference Centres

Conference centres provide all of the business services needed to run a successful business meeting along with comfortable rooms and amenities. These tend to be higher on the price range scale but no expense is spared in service or upgrades. For example, the Avda Rio de Guadalmedina in Malaga is a four-star hotel with rooms ranging in the $220-$300 US per night range. It is new and modern and is close to all of the good restaurants and sights. You can just as the concierge for directions or to make your dinner reservations for you.

As you can easily see, choosing a Malaga hotel offers many different options at various prices. To decide which is right for your holiday, the only real question may be do you want to be closer to the golf course or the shopping plaza?

Summer Family Vacations With Global Resorts Network

Summer Family Vacations With Global Resorts Network

by David Hopper

As summer approaches, millions of people will make plans for a family vacation either in the United States or internationally and usually for a week at a time. The Internet allows them to plan a vacation as the family decides on a destination, negotiate their way around it for the best possible price on a hotel, and then they have to decide whether their budget allows them to fly or pack up for the road trip. Others may use a travel agent, utilize a timeshare, or use a certificate system to hopefully lock down their discounted hotel price. Not exactly a simple task to undertake by anyone's standards. Along comes Global Resorts Network (GRN) to make it all possible.

GRN is a 20-year-old company who is in the business of selling and supporting affordable, high-end, luxury hotel and resort memberships. This not only saves the customer thousands of dollars per vacation but also expands the destination possibilities to over 5000 four and five star luxury hotels and resorts in 55 countries. With GRN, the toughest part shifts from finding a bargain hotel to selecting which luxury hotel or resort bargain to find.

David Hopper, an independent distributor with Global Resorts Network, says "this is the best vacation membership because it gives people the freedom to travel to places that families may have considered unreachable, with savings that can pay for the membership after only one trip". The membership is so powerful, unique, and affordable that it no longer makes sense to purchase a timeshare or take the time to research that one beautiful resort to stay in. They are all laid out for you on one user-friendly webpage.

GRN offers a one-stop shop with its secure website for selecting the resort, flight, or cruise trip. Their customers can enjoy two types of memberships: gold and platinum. While there are differences between the two, they both offer the same database of resorts at the click of a button.

Gold Membership · $1295 one time fee · 3-Year Membership · Access to over 5000 4 & 5 Star Hotels and Resorts worldwide · Members enjoy some of the most sought after locations in the world for $398 to a maximum of $698 for 8 days and 7 nights · Secure website to confirm and pay for your destinations · Download accurate maps for directions · Print out your own registration confirmations

"At these prices it's no wonder why it is becoming so popular," says David," anyone who sees it wants it." Since GRN introduced this new private membership in March they have already amassed thousands of satisfied customers. Customers like Davis Sheah have said, "the last trip to Bangkok you arranged for us was superb. Thank you for your good service, we enjoyed it very much." Derek Choon of Singapore said, "First of all, let me say this to you: You are the best travel agent I've had, and I've used quite a few in my career - You're efficient, fast, polite, helpful, and most of all very pleasant to deal with. Many Thanks."

As if the product wasn't good enough, GRN has a staff of customer service agents available to assist you with your questions or concerns. The staff is ready to take great care of the needs of any individual or business that uses the membership. The savings spans to all travelers who want to take advantage of the one-time fee and begin traveling to the most desired locations the world over.

After all, don't we all want to see a thousand places before we die?

What is your intention for the holidays?

What is your intention for the holidays?

by Amy Lippman

I grew up in Miami and every December my husband Steve and I go to Miami to visit my parents for a few days. My parents are big "foodies." They love good food and love treating us to nice meals out when we're with them. I also love good food and eating at nice restaurants, but I find that when I eat several meals out in a row that I don't enjoy it as much. Each meal out no longer feels special. Sometimes less is more, know what I mean?

Last December I did an experiment. Rather than going out to eat every night that we were in Miami, I decided I would do some cooking. I was on vacation and didn't have much to do, so cooking was fun and relaxing. I was able to try some new recipes and give my mom a break from cooking dinner every night. The best part? My family loved all the yummy food I cooked! It didn't feel like a sacrifice to stay in for dinner. It was fun and delicious.

In about a week Steve and I leave for Miami where we'll be enjoying a 2-week vacation. I am sure this vacation will include some decadent meals out - especially since we will be celebrating my birthday and our second anniversary. I am looking forward to these special meals, but I am also looking forward to continuing this new tradition of enjoying some special meals at home. (I think my parents are also looking forward to this!)

I have also set an intention that I will continue to exercise while on vacation. I don't have a gym membership in Miami, but that won't get in my way. I'll walk and jog outside, go to my parents gym where I can pay a small fee for each visit and use the weights or take a spinning class, and perhaps check out a local yoga or pilates studio.

Now you might be thinking this sounds like a sacrifice. Why would I want to cook and exercise on my vacation? I don't see it as a sacrifice at all. Rather, I am making decisions to do things that are going to make me feel great - without feeling deprived. My goal isn't to achieve some sort of unattainable perfection over the holidays, but to have a balance. And I know from past experience that this will keep my mood and my energy will balanced so I can having an amazing vacation.

What small steps can you take to achieve a balance during the holidays? The things that will make you feel great may be different than the things that make me feel great. Maybe you will eat more mindfully, make a healthier version of a holiday dish, or try a new outdoor activity. Take a minute to think about it.

What's your intention for the holidays? I'd love to hear from you. Email your questions and comments to me at amy@wellnesshealthcoaching.com or contact me to schedule a complimentary one-hour nutrition and health consultation.

Why are beach weddings so popular in California ?

Why are beach weddings so popular in California ?

by Alexander Pommett

Why is Southern California so popular for destination weddings? The answer is simple: wedding beach locations. Couples pay good money to vacation and recreate near the coastal zones. Whether it's the amazing and beautiful scenery of Laguna Beach, San Diego, or Orange County, beach weddings are here to stay. With the delicate, gentle breeze running through your hair, a wedding on the beach is hard to forget.

When planning your wedding beach location you must consider when and where. Fortunately, Southern California has moderate winters and consistently warm weather. Regardless, summer is the busiest time of year for beach weddings. Even with the pleasant weather prepare for the chance of a cool ocean breeze. Near the water, the temps are usually lower and it can get nippy.

So now that we've decided when to have a wedding lets talk about where. Los Angeles County is a great place to start for wedding locations. There are several wonderful wedding locations in Orange County. The OC is a beach lovers' paradise. Nearly every community within the boundaries of the county is near the ocean. Newport beach offers a great selection of luxury resorts, and wedding services such as photographers and fine catering.

In sunny Los Angeles you will find Santa Monica, Venice, or Marina Del Ray as noble attractions for your wedding on the beach. All three are equally beautiful in their own regard with something different to offer. Santa Monica really stands out with is gorgeous beachfront properties and spacious parks. The beaches are public and guest parking is readily accessible. FYI, it's always best to check with local services to confirm your beach wedding is allowed and not already booked.

For those planning an upscale wedding, an incredible destination is Malibu. Situated along the Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu is very popular among celebrities and movie stars planning a knockout wedding. Of particular interested is Zuma Beach - the view will take your breath away. Filled with nothing but coastline Zuma is perfect for anyone seeking refuge from the noise of the city. There's nothing quite romantic like getting married on the beach. Try it and you won't be disappointed.

A look at the Crucial Steps in Your Wildlife Photography

A look at the Crucial Steps in Your Wildlife Photography

When I first thought about doing wildlife photography I was a bit stuck for inspiration. I was in the middle of the city with no wildlife in sight, unless you counted the people milling all around me, and I wasn't due up for another long vacation for at least a few months yet. So obviously wildlife photography in the wild was out, but someone very helpfully pointed me in the direction that I'm about to point you in now. What about the wildlife at the zoos? There was more or less all the wildlife that I could want just sitting there bored in their cages watching people make funny faces at them. (Sounds a bit like what a baby has to go through doesn't it?)

But I still had to wait for the weekend for that and I was chafing at the bit to get into my stride in wildlife photography, when the second suggestion struck me as being the answer to all my troubles. Wildlife photography from home! I could get started immediately I went home, and if nothing else I could always go after the dog. Now that we've sorted out where you can take your wildlife shots, maybe we should now think about what kind of wildlife photography you were thinking of doing.

This is a crucial step in your wildlife photography but not something that you might want to look into just yet. You might still want to get your hands into everything to decide exactly what it is about wildlife photography that you like. Is it the thought of capturing on film the big cats like lions and tigers? Or maybe you want to photograph elephants. What about hippos, or zebras or even rhinos?

And if you don't like the idea of going big, then do you like the idea of going small? Have you thought about birds and insects? What about the much maligned rodent varieties? As you can see there are many different types of wildlife photography options available to you and you just have to reach out and take it.

In the wild is where you get all the action, all the heart pounding terror of being in the wild along with the animals, knowing that you're in their home court and that your advantage depends entirely on the guide who's leading you around. This then is what many of the greatest wildlife photographers yearn to do and where they end up anyway. Whether the reality meets their expectation of the dream is another matter entirely.

They're there, in the wild, with the ability to get up close and personal with their wildlife subjects. Nothing at all like the zoo back home, but then again what did you expect right? However, it's also true that wildlife shots, are natural, don't only have to be shots of the big game animals. Wildlife shots can be of anything that is considered wild. Take my dog for instance. I consider the shots that I took of him to be wildlife purely for the reason that there isn't a tame bone in his body. He bounces and bounds around like nobody's business and defends his territory with deep menacing growls. The fact that he wouldn't hurt a fly is another matter entirely.

So although in-the-wild wildlife shots are great and look amazing, I would take whatever I can get, at least in the beginning. In the wild is preferably where you might like to take your wildlife photographs, but sometimes you just don't have the choice or the ability to do that. In that case I would recommend that you start your sojourn into wildlife photography at the zoo. Going to the zoo will offer you the opportunity to catch some of the fiercest wildlife, if not in their habitats, then at their best and their worst. It's a bit like catching a movie star in their baggy sweat pants with absolutely no makeup on them! It's fascinating and you won't necessarily get the chance for such candid shots if you were in their natural habitat.

When You Need A Detailed Map Of Spain

When You Need A Detailed Map Of Spain

by Ken J. Morris

A detailed map of Spain is important when you are planning a vacation. A good map will give you an idea of the layout of the country. This will help you decide where you want to spend your vacation. If you plan to visit a few cities, this will help you plan your itinerary.

Areas on a Detailed Map of Spain

In the northern part of the country, there are coastal resorts and quaint fishing villages. These will give you a taste of authentic Spanish life in a small village. Some areas, such as La Rioja are known for wine production. You will get to experience the culture more than you would in a large city that is a tourist attraction.

You get the chance to experience history by visiting ancient monasteries and viewing cave paintings. In this area, you can also experience nature. The Pyrenees mountains form the natural border along the northernmost part of the country with France. You can take walking and hiking tours here.

Madrid is the best known city in the Central part of the country. This city is the capital and is filled with things to do. The central part of the map is also where you will find many ancient towns with historical landmarks and places to visit.

The central part of the country consists of plains divided by mountain chains. The Sierra de Guadarrama, Sierra de Gredos and Montes de Toledo are the mountain chains found on this section of the map. You can experience both nature and big city life here.

The Mediterranean is located on the east coast of the country. On the map, you will find the Catalona, Valencia and Murcia regions. Large cities to visit in this area include Alicante, Torrevieja and Barcelona. This area is also known as the Costa Blanca.

The biggest attraction on the Costa Blanca is the beaches. These areas on the coast are very busy during the summer season as people from all over Europe flock to the beaches. Look on the map for smaller villages that lie inland from the coast. There are many interesting places to visit in this area.

The southern part of Spain is where you will find cities like Seville, Malaga and Granada. This area is also known as the Costa del Sol. This area is becoming a popular tourist destination. Major attractions on this coast include the beaches. This area is also becoming a popular spot for golf vacations in all seasons.

The southern part of the map has beach areas on the coast line. Further inland there are mountain areas. Cities on this part of the map are also very popular spots to visit in the summer. This area is also becoming popular in the winter among people trying to escape the freezing temperatures.

When You Need a Detailed Map of Spain

You will need a detailed map if you are taking a tour of Spain. If you are touring with a group, a map may be provided for you. Some popular tours include wine and food tours, hiking and bicycle tours.

If you are touring with a group, try to stick with the group. A map is handy in case you get lost. If you have time away from the group, make sure you understand where you will be meeting at the end of the day. Make sure you can find this location on your map.

If you are travelling on your own, you will need to purchase a detailed map. This is very important if you will be driving from one area to another. Get a detailed map that shows both large highways and smaller roads. This will help prevent getting lost along the way.

Fun Things to do on a Caribbean Honeymoon Vacation

Fun Things to do on a Caribbean Honeymoon Vacation

If you are planning a Caribbean Honeymoon Vacation, you made a great choice. A caribbean honeymoon means lots of fun and romantic activitiies. Many of the activities will involve the sea in one way or another. You won't be able to resist the relaxing sound of waves rushing to shore during a romatic sunset walk on the beach. But there is more to a Caribbean honeymoon vacation that just sun, sea, and sand. You can discover lush tropical forests, or try local food and fruits in the local market stalls. The islands offer a variety of pleasurable sights and memoravle sounds besides just honeymooners on a beach.

George Town, Grand Cayman

For the adventurous type out on a Caribbean honeymoon vacation, try snorkeling with the stingrays at Stingray City Sandbar. You will encounter stingrays. No need to panic. These are relatively tame animals. They may swim right up to you and eat food right from your hands. Many enjoy when you rub their bellies, and you would love the touch of their velvety soft skin. Despite their fear-inspiring name, they are generally extremely gentle creatures and they won't hurt you. However, you must be sure to stay away from their tails.

Away from the sea fun during your Caribbean honeymoon vacation here in George Town, Grand Cayman can include taking a tour through the town itself, which is the capital of the Cayman Islands. Visit the Conch Shell House, made solely of trumpet shells or visit the Turtle Farm, a sea turtle nursery that breeds and raises green and hawksbill turtles. The north side of the island has Rum Point Club where you can experience a unique island-style day out in its scenic surroundings, or take an exhilarating flight-seeing tour over the island to get a bird's-eye view.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and you'll be sure to want to spend at least one evening there watching the sun set with your sweetie during your Caribbean honeymoon vacation, and Rose Hall Beach Club is a perfect place to do it. Glittering white sand and nearly translucent waters make the admission fee to this secluded beach seem well worth paying. Beach bars, open-air dance areas, volleyball courts, restaurants, showers and complete water sports programs are among the most obvious things to do during your Caribbean honeymoon vacation here.

Before you leave be sure to explore the bustling Gloucester Avenue with its wonderful shopping and various restaurants, or play a round of golf at Wyndham Rose Hall Golf & Beach Resort which features a waterfall on the 15th green. One thing you must do is to try a favorite local drink, such as Mawbie or Red Stripe Beer. You can also go horseback riding along the beach. What a romantic way to enjoy the last few hours of your Caribbean honeymoon vacation.

Samana, Dominican Republic

Somewhat removed from the typical tourist trail, the luxuriant peninsula of Samana is a paradise for nature lovers to visit on a Caribbean honeymoon vacation. Not only is it home to one of the most important mangrove reserves and rainforests in the Caribbean, but its crystal-clear coast offers some of the most divine diving found along the northern coast of this island. Being able to see up to 150 feet in some spots affords spectacular views of the reefs and colorful tropical fish darting through the waters around you.

If your Caribbean honeymoon vacation to this lovely location happens to fall during a January, you might wish to try and catch the sight of thousands of humpback whales migrating south to Samana Bay during their mating season. It's said you can find up to 300 whales at any given time, so come take a gander at these magnificent mammals while you have a chance, and watch them frolic, sing and court one another. It's just one of many more delightful experiences you can have on your vacation.

Fishing Is Fun For Everyone

Fishing Is Fun For Everyone

by Chris Bell

Fishing has to be one of the greatest pastimes ever invented. It is also probably one of the oldest. Early man had to eat, and those succulent Salmon would just call to early men as they saw them in the pristine waters of a streambed. Early fisherman used their hands or sharpened sticks to catch fish. The earliest recorded use of fishing lures was in 200AD in Aelian's Natural History. The earliest recorded instances of fly fishing were written in 1210 as part of romance novel. The first really comprehensive book about fly fishing was written in 1496 and titled Treatyse of Fysshynge with an Angle. This book was the first to put fishing forward as a gentlemen's sport on a par with hunting, then a sport for kings and nobles.

Nowadays of course we don't live or die based on whether or not some fish is caught, so there is a much less stress and a lot more fun to be had. Thank god for that, it has become a real pastime and no longer needs to be an occupation.

New England waters are among the most productive on earth. The winter cycle allows Nutrients to be brought into the upper layers of the water resulting in an incredible bloom of life beginning in the spring and lasting throughout the summer into early fall. Phytoplankton and zooplankton bloom in massive amounts, bringing in the small filter feeding fish, which are followed by the larger predators and so on. Thus New England waters are famous for good fishing.

Rhode Island is a great summertime destination for both fresh and saltwater fisherman. Striped Bass have come back in a big way, although there are very large numbers of small bass the large ones are still being overharvested. Other species like Bluefish and Flounder are very abundant. Many people come to Rhode Island during the summer just to enjoy the fishing, especially from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, since RI has a superior fishery.

There are many ways to enjoy this sport. Many fish from shore, sitting in a chair on the beach with baited rods, waiting for that telltale hit and relaxing. Quite a few own boats and fish from them on their own or with their friends. Others vacation in RI around Newport or South County and charter a boat to take them to and enjoy a day of fishing. Of course, there is also the avid fishermen who live just to fish. All these different people can find satisfaction somewhere along the 400 miles of coastline in the Ocean State.

The sites can be quite as interesting as the fishing itself. Fishing from shore and watching the surf come down the Charleston breachway, now there's a sight. It is especially interesting watching a boater attempt to charge down the breachway on the way into or out of Ninigret pond, with rocks on either side of them and huge waves going into the breach. Sunrise in the morning on Narragansett Bay can be a very beautiful site. Of course, nothing beats the excitement of a huge school of small baitfish jumping out of the water as rapacious Bluefish smash through them. It is quite a sight to see as the surface of the water boils with the action. Just makes you want to grab a fishing pole and throw something in there while they're still slashing. Of course, the most fun of all is when you have a fish on the line and the drag is singing as he makes a run to escape, with you holding on as the rod is bent over double. Its very exciting, and something we can all enjoy at on e time or another.

Waikiki Restaurants-We Love Them, But ...

Waikiki Restaurants-We Love Them, But ...

by Lori Downes

You're on vacation in beautiful Waikiki and you want to go out for a romantic dinner overlooking the ocean. You walk around a bit and find a place with a great view and nice ambiance. You go in expecting a nice meal only to be disappointed with bad service and mediocre food. Unfortunately, this has happened to us quite a few times. Sometimes we find a place with good food but the staff and service are so bad we don't go back. What's going on and how do you find the good restaurants in Waikiki?

Like many other tourist destinations, it seems some restaurants in Waikiki take advantage of the customers who are only in town for vacation. Since these tourists probably won't become regular customers, the restaurants don't put the energy into quality food and service. And just because a place is expensive does not mean it's going to be any better than a cheaper one. For some places, you basically pay for the view and that's all you're going to get.

This is a frustrating situation but not hopeless. There are terrific restaurants in Honolulu and Waikiki and here's how to find them. Check guide books and online reviews like those at www.tripadvisor.com. Get recommendations from your friends and the hotel concierge. Often the hotel concierge will have sample menus from area restaurants you can look at. Also talk to other hotel staff or even shop clerks. These people are locals and can point you in the right direction. They can tell you about the good places and also the restaurants to avoid. (Keep in mind that sometimes the concierge and taxi drivers receive commissions and discounts from the places they recommend so try to ask around.)

Well known hotels usually have nice restaurants, bars and cafes. We've found some amazing restaurants that we will go back to again and again and two of our favorites are Musashi in the Hyatt and Sansei in the Marriott. Both the Hyatt and the Marriott are international hotels with reputations for quality and they work hard to earn and keep that reputation. You may never come back to their Waikiki locations but chances are, you will have the opportunity to visit another location in the future so they want to keep you happy.

It's a shame that some of the restaurants in Waikiki are less than stellar but you will find others that are simply amazing. You can see our favorites at www.honolulu-insider.com. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Costa Rica Surfing - Riding High!

Costa Rica Surfing - Riding High!

The surfing in Costa Rica is topnotch with a wide variety of breaks and swells to ride. And with year round consistent surf, this Central American country is considered by many as one of the top surfing destinations in the world. Here the waters are warm all year long and with over 700 miles of coastline and literally hundreds of breaks, surfing in Costa Rica is truly something special!

Home to quite a few international surfing tournaments and some of the friendliest people in the world, surfing in Costa Rica can be a memorable experience for many. Affordable prices and easy access to most breaks adds to the appeal of surfing in Costa Rica. If you don't know how to surf, don't worry there are plenty of great surf camps here that can show you the ropes and make you an expert in no time at all.

Best Surfing in Costa Rica The best place to go surfing in Costa Rica has to be Witches Rock or Ollie's Point located near Playa Naranjo inside the Parque Nacional Santa Rosa. A legendary place to come surfing; the waves here are rated as the finest in the country. Another goof destination for surfers is Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas province. Situated near the beach town of Jaco, another popular surf spot, Playa Hermosa has consistent waves and a strong break, making it an expert surfer zone.

To catch one of the longest left breaks on the Pacific side of Central America head to Pavones in the Golfo Dulce area. The Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the biggest break in Costa Rica and is meant for expert surfers only. Sharp and fast, the waves here are very dangerous and should not be attempted unless you are a pro.

Popular Costa Rica Surf Spots Mal Pais and Santa Theresa are two very popular surf spots on the Nicoya Peninsula. Home to a number of surf camps as well, the waves here are excellent with plenty of affordable accommodations. The Malpais Surf Camp and Resort, Frank's Place and the Hotel Flor Blanca are a few of the well-known places to stay in this area.

In Guanacaste province and on the Nicoya Peninsula as well, both Playa Grande and Playa Negra offer some superb surfing. Playa Grande is a more quiet surf zone, while Playa Negra has some exciting waves. Made famous when the movie Endless Summer II was filmed here, the breaks at Playa Negra are fast and hollow.

Both Dominical and Matapalo are quiet surf zones and are ideal for the more serious surfer who wants nothing more than to just surf. Dominical lies along the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, while Matapalo sits on the Osa Peninsula close to the Corcovado National Park.

Have you Got Island Fever?

Have you Got Island Fever?

by Dean Milverton

Have you "Got Island Fever"? No doubt your first question is, what is "Island Fever"? Let me explain a little, Island Fever is what happens to someone who either longs to be sitting on a tropical island beach relaxing or someone who has explored and visited many islands and is unable to live away from an island. Symptoms can include poor attention span at work, long daydreams at work or in social situations, a far away look in your eye and an obsession for cocktail drinks with small paper umbrellas in them. Most cases of Island Fever can be cured with a vacation to a tropical island location in the nearby vicinity, be aware though if not treated in a short period of time the symptoms can become permanent and at times fatal.

So do you have Island Fever? If the answer is yes, we have the perfect website for your Island hotel, resort, flight and vacation planning, http://www.gotislandfever.com. This new island travel website includes close to 1000 island travel articles, island photos and an island discussion forum where you can exchange travel tips and discuss island travel destinations. Coming soon to www.GotIslandFever.com is a variety of island travel competitions where members can participate and win island travel prices.

The GotIslandFever.com website has also been known to assist "Island Fever" sufferers in combating this horrible condition and in assisting them in settling into a normal day to day routine including work and social situations with little or few problems after an island vacation. Be warned though, some precaution is needed as "Island Fever" sufferers have been known to become addicted to participating in the www.GotIslandFever.com travel forums, though this is not a highly serious concern "Island Fever" sufferers should be limited to 2 or 3 hrs daily of island travel information, to assist in combating this condition.

If you have more questions on "Island Fever", if you start to develop "Island Fever" symptoms or need Island hotel, resort, flight and vacation information please visit http://www.gotislandfever.com as soon as possible.

Colorado Mountain Vacations - 4 Top Summer Vacations in the Colorado Mountains

Colorado Mountain Vacations - 4 Top Summer Vacations in the Colorado Mountains

by Peter Makuta

The Colorado Mountains are spectacular and exciting. But Colorado is a big state, and sometimes mountain roads are not what you expect. Knowing where to spend your time, and how much time you need for various activities, can be the difference between an exciting vacation, and a vacation that is just memorable for the wrong reasons. Here's how you can make your Colorado mountain vacation memorable and fun.

Focus on one region of the Colorado Mountains, and centrally locate where you stay. Seeing the most popular sites is a great way to get your feet on the ground. And there's nothing wrong with just being a tourist. But limiting your area will also allow you to discover what's beyond the most popular attractions. Extra time to go back to that shop you passed by on your way to Pikes Peak. An extra half day to hike that trail the waitress told you about. An extra hour to just watch the sunset and chat.

But where do you start? Here are some of the most diverse areas in Colorado that can give you all the mountains you can take, and without driving all over the state. But be warned, each of these areas has so much to offer you will certainly want to come back!

- Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, and Manitou Springs - Estes Park, Boulder, and Rocky Mountain National Park - Durango, Mesa Verde National Park, and the Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - Vail, Breckenridge and Aspen

Pick one of these areas, look at it on a map, and do a little research. Now, once you have an area narrowed down, find your lodging. Focus on finding the most interesting and comfortable lodging for your stay. Here are some ideas corresponding to each of the above areas:

In the Pikes Peak Area, Manitou Springs is a smaller mountain town, yet centrally located to everything. It's quaint, it's a resort town, and you're in the mountains. But, you are also close enough to Colorado Springs with all the advantages of a larger city.

Estes Park is surely a mountain town without any doubt. It's right near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, so you can't get much more mountainous than that. But don't overlook Boulder. You can still get up to Rocky Mountain National Park in about 50 minutes, yet you also have access to some of best lower mountains in Colorado. And, Boulder is a vibrant cosmopolitan city that is world know for outdoor activities.

The ski area towns of Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen are a different matter. They comprise the most spread out area on our list. The best thing to do is to pick one based on your personality. Vail and Aspen are more up scale, Breckenridge is more laid back. During the summer, condo rates are pretty good, as with most ski areas in the summer. You may also want to consider Glenwood Springs. It has one of the largest hot springs pools in the world, and is not very far from Aspen.

And finally, the town of Durango is certainly a great central location for Mesa Verde National Park and all the attractions of southwestern Colorado. With a population of only about 15,000, it happens to be the big city in the area.

Colorado mountain vacations are always special. So go ahead and pick one of these most treasured areas in the Colorado mountains. And this time, try planning your vacation in a more confined area, and leave more time for discovery.

Vacation and travel plans are coming together

Vacation and travel plans are coming together

We’re just about ready to set off on our first family vacation in more than two years. Our last adventure was a break-neck road trip to Jasper, Texas, and Heavener, Okla., to visit my wife’s father and stepmother and my dad, respectively. Our son, Keegan, wasn’t quite 2 yet and he made the drive much longer than it had ever been when it was just Donna and me in the car.

It wasn’t a bad trip, just very hectic. Little ones don’t wait to go potty. They get tired of staring out the window or at a DVD player mounted on the back of mommy’s head rest. When it’s time to eat, there is no explaining to a toddler there is still another 75 miles to go before we reach the next Scottish-named internationally-known burger place with a playground.

I’ve made the drive back and forth to Heavener many times through the years since I left home, usually alone. I have gotten from my house in Elizabethtown to my dad’s front yard in just more than 10 hours if I stopped only twice for fuel and a bathroom break. Normally I’d drive just a bit faster than the speed limit, especially during the flat and boring stretch through Arkansas on Interstate 40. I’d eat sandwiches in the car and have a stack of my favorite CDs handy so that I could sing at the top of my lungs and no one would tell me to be quiet.

Then later when my wife Donna and I began to travel, we would take four or five breaks on the same trip from E’town to dad’s place. There was very little eating in the car and the speed was kept closer to the posted limits. The drive then took nearly a dozen hours, but was still respectable, considering it is 680 miles or so one way.

Hauling as much fanny as possible, she and I made a trip to her dad’s in Jasper once that took 14 hours one way. Not sure on the mileage, but it’s a long way that’s for sure. The last few hours of the drive to Jasper is on two-lane U.S. highways, which wind through several small towns. That doesn’t make for speedy travel either.

On the last major road trip Keegan, Donna and I drove to Heavener first and spent a few days. Then we drove down south about six hours and hit her dad’s place. Logistically, it was just as quick to return to Oklahoma and come home from there as to drive out of east Texas to Kentucky, so that’s what we did. The trip was something like 2,000 miles in eight days.

Now with Addison in tow, that’s not a drive I’m willing to make again soon. With a baby girl eating and filling up a diaper every few hours, something different had to happen.

The compromise we came to is for our brood to go to Heavener and have her folks come visit in my neck of the woods. It’s not too much of a drive for them and will save us a fortune in gas and time.

But there is still nearly 1,400 miles to be traveled in about six days time. The first and last days will mainly be on the road, leaving only about four to knock around and visit.

I had a brainstorm last weekend and decided to rent an RV for the drive. If Keegan needs the bathroom, he can just get up and go. If Addison fouls the air, we can change her and keep going. If I want a sandwich, I guess one could be brought to me if I asked really nicely. Since dad’s place isn’t large enough for all of us, the RV could serve as a motel room for her folks. I’m a genius!

I laughed as visions of Cousin Eddie’s RV in the movie Christmas Vacation flashed through my head. This was going to be awesome.

Then I called the RV place. Believe it or not there’s a national chain for such things. I’d made up my mind to double check prices and go ahead and book an RV for the trip. After taking down departure and return dates, size of the family, etc., the nice lady from the RV company informed me the rental would be ready for me to pick up in Nashville or some place in Ohio since there isn’t a dealership for them nearby. The RV was going to cost an extra 32 cents per mile after the first free 800 miles. I would have to pay extra to use the bathroom and kitchen areas. Running the generator costs $3 per hour and I’d have to fill up the RV with gas when I dropped it off, too.

Grand total, before all the additional stuff and prior to repeatedly filling up an RV that gets an estimated 10 miles per gallon, $1,000 was what I could expect to pay.

Suddenly being crammed into our 1998 Chevrolet Blazer is the best idea in the history of the world. Her dad can get a motel room, several in fact, for that kind of money.

Wish us luck, we’re going to need it.
